    No Future for the GOP?

OK, it's certified now. Obama is actually worse than Bush, no ifs ands or buts. CASE CLOSED: http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/04/08/olbermann/index.html Un-fucking-believable. Correct me if I'm wrong, but even the lettres de cachet of the ancien regime couldn't have...

yeah I've got them working, but I can't say that I've been able to do anything useful with them. i don't know eviews and it seems pretty unwieldly

Yeah, I don't put much stock in the Chinese stats though. Also he renminbi isn't as undervalued vs. most other currencies as it is for the US, and I'm sure that China is still running a surplus with the US.

    global financial crash yay!

not really much has changed since the last one eh One piece of encouraging news: Hu Jintao is coming to Washington in two weeks. Apparently this signals that the peg is going to be loosened. The downside is that means that it is unlikely that China will be named a currency manipulator by the...

    No Future for the GOP?

"tho. Health care - for better or worse, considerably firmer stance on Israeli settlement-building, drawdown in Iraq, ending the Mexico City Policy, various appointments (for example, finally getting Craig Becker onto the NLRB), energy bill(s) in the works, etc." Well, all I can say to that is...

    No Future for the GOP?

The culture wars were the latest skirmish but the themes go back to Jefferson/Jackson vs. Hamilton. But yeah, the topic has been done to death. The more interesting one right now is "What's the matter with San Francisco?" aka why do progressives who are constantly betrayed by the Democrats...

    No Future for the GOP?

I think you guys may be missing the point of Frank Rich. The framing of the response is way way off. I don't think that anyone seriously argues that more poor people support the Republicans than the Democrats. No one would expect that. You do know that the Democrats are still regarded as the...

    No Future for the GOP?

"let's think aloud about predicting what might happen. if the Teabaggers get such a head of steam up and the GOP continues its really rather robust obstructionism, and - for the sake of argument - healthcare as Obama has constituted it, is eviscerated, what next for the USA? let's say - for the...

    No Future for the GOP?

Well, basically everyone who doesn't already have health insurance is going to be forced to buy insurance from private insurance companies, which already averages $13,000 per year for a family. If you don't buy, you get fined and the IRS comes after you for the money. It seems like a highly...

    No Future for the GOP?

This is the most amazing piece of cognitive dissonance I think I have ever seen: How can the teabaggers take a condemnation of their entire movement by their ancestral enemy, Alexander Hamilton, and mistake it for a some sort of pro-tea party statement. Mind-boggling

about the mandates though: what a terrible idea. Way to give the Republicans the perfect campaign issue.

    No Future for the GOP?

Those healthcare challenges are being made on a pretty shoddy legal basis and are going to fail pretty quickly. I think the state level politicians are just doing some PR, registering their opposition on a hot issue that they really have nothing to do with. It's just opportunism on their...

    No Future for the GOP?

"who could be more metropolitan and libertarian than Ayn Rand?" Well, Nietzsche's oft-stated and visceral hatred of anti-semites, along with his rather disdainful take on the German people didn't stop the Nazis from appropriating him either. Contradictions don't bother these people. Sorry for...

    No Future for the GOP?

IMO the fundamental underlying narrative of American politics since Johnson has been the passage of the Civil Rights act in 1964 and the aftermath. While signing it, Johnson said that the Democratic Party was "signing away the South for 50 years". With 2014 just around the corner, I would...

    No Future for the GOP?

Well yeah, but Kerry was an incredibly terrible candidate too. Also worse than Dukakis. Anyways, my main point is that the Democrats lose elections that they should win (Gore, Kerry) because they are afraid to get their hands dirty and do a little rabble rousing for fear of looking...
