    Favorite vocalist

Am I really the first person to say Otis Redding in this thread?! Also: Ella Fitzgerald Asha Bhosle Minnie Ripperton PJ Harvey (it’s more about the delivery than the technical merit) Aaliyah Ari Up (for weirdness) Green Gartside Leadbelly Jacques Brel I'd also second Caetano Veloso and add...

    Grime Top Tens

Definitely. And I'd probably say Sometimes by Ruff Sqwad.

    Are you hard?

I don't think so. There have been several occasions when I've been completely oblivious to other girls trying to start fights with me, and have managed to get out of the situation unharmed. I just seem to have minimal fighting nous. Then again, I've never ended up having to face a situation...

    Turkish music

On the mainstream pop side of things, I quite like Burak Kut. His track Komple was being played everywhere, when I visited Turkey, this summer. I've been meaning to get more into it, I love how energetic their music tends to sound.

    Tinchy Stryder

I've listened to it once through. I like it but I haven't noted anything spectacular about it. I'm not gonna listen to it again until I get a proper copy; I think it'll click better without 'THIS IS A PROMO COPY' playing through all the tracks.

Dancing in the service of thought

How do you know they didn't like you? If they only revealed that they didn't like you after you'd broken up, then I don't think their information was very reliable.

    You

Referring back to the poll, I chose that I never know what people think of me and, I have to admit, it sometimes drives me crazy. When a person has made a strong impression on me, I can often spend much time wondering what goes through their mind when I talk to them, or when they think of me...

Dancing in the service of thought

I think the only time I've ever wondered what another person is thinking whilst dancing is when a nearby friend looks like they're about to drunkenly throw up on my shoes. I've recently come back from holiday and, for two weeks, I spend every night going out dancing in clubs and bars with my...

    Newham Generals

Yeah, it's on Dubstep Allstars 5 as 'Night / Tease Elder Dub' by Coki and Benga.

    Dizzee Rascal- Maths and English

It's still a million times better than In At The Deep End, though.

Slough Record Centre? I don't think there is actually any other independent record store in Slough. And even that seems to be closing: http://onthetrailofthegreat.blogspot.com/2007/04/rip-slough-record-centre.html I live quite close to that area and I am actually very surprised that the Centre...

    Japan - Adolescent Sex

I love this song. I also love Japan: Adolescent Sex, Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Tin Drum and Quiet Life are all immense. I like their earlier pop-oriented stuff just as much as their later new wave records. I can't fully describe it, I just find everything about them great. I'll probably think...

The hedumacation system in modern Britain

From what I’ve read, I don’t believe anyone in this thread has any argument with that, it’s just that it’s escalated to suffocating levels of control; there’s a difference between having teaching objectives and force-feeding students all the information. I definitely wouldn’t knock my teachers...

    The Big Hello Thread

Ha, thanks! You're right, 'pulchritude' would probably be better suited to describing a feeling of nausea, or something. There doesn't seem to be much mention of last.fm profiles on other threads, so I'll just post the link for mine here: http://www.last.fm/user/universelles

    Dizzee Rascal- Maths and English

I dunno, there are some really good moments on it. I think that Scratchy was really prominent, and for good reason. I think he should release more stuff of his own.

    The Big Hello Thread

Erm, Hi. I'm new and, having read through some threads, I'm quite intimidated by most of the posters on this board. I'm a 17 year-old female and I don't have any particularly interesting anecdotes to share. I think that the massive grime and dubstep threads are great, though.

The hedumacation system in modern Britain

I’m currently sitting my A Levels and the whole system, where I have to abdicate my own opinion for the sake of complying with the curriculum, really riles me. I remember that, when preparing for GCSE History and English exams, I was specifically told not to specify my own opinion and simply be...

    Grime Compilation

If I made a compilation, it'd definitely have to feature 'It's Nothing' by Ruff Sqwad and Roll Deep just because I never get sick of hearing that. As for the most grime-sounding tracks I first heard, it'll probably be something not nearly as monumental as it should be, like Dizzee's 'I Luv...

    Rihanna - Umbrella

I don't think it's the vocal production but there is something about that track that I really really like. I'm really not a Ciara fan, but the first time I heard it, I loved it (it sounds best with the volume turned right up).
