Abyssinians at Mean Fiddler / Astoria 09.03.05

Saw the Vienna show and was especially impressed by the Abyssinians - time has not dulled the edge of those lovely harmonies. Hope sax man Dean Fraser is also at the London gig, he was great as well. Enjoy!

BEst Under-rated Dub LP ever of the week

Recently reissued by the Basic Channel boys, check the rest of the program here. It's good, but African Roots Act 1 is a few notches above that, IMHO. But that may be next week's Best Underrated Dub Album. ;)

General Degree - "Pot Cover" - Is anything else like this??

More GD riddims: Arrow, River Bed, Rattlesnake, Dingy + Gravity (?) Dutch Pot is also the name of his label, I believe. John Eden's mix is absolutely blindin', take up Paul 2Stepfan's kind offer to d/l it if you haven't already done so.

    sex noises and electronic music

You're completely right, it's not totally electronic. "I Feel Love", however, is, but you don't get 10 minutes of Donna's moaning and groaning.

Donna Summer "Love to love you baby" is an obvious one.

John Eden and Paul Meme present Lyric Maker (from England and Jamaica): an eighties d

I don't have my music with me and I might be sticking my scrawny neck out too far on this one, but here goes. "Fade Away" riddim e.g. Junior Byles "Fade Away", Horace Andy "Fade Away", Ranking Joe "Weakheart fadeaway"... The Thriller U track in question uses a digital remake of that riddim and...

John Eden and Paul Meme present Lyric Maker (from England and Jamaica): an eighties d

Phoarrr... I'm loving this! After that stellar roots set, a fantastic bunch of dancehall tunes with plenty of dubstyle action throughout. Lovely. Thanks to both of you!

Some thoughts. The fact that Konono #1 may become hip currency in avant garde circles says more about the state of the avant garde (a bit jaded, perhaps?) than about Konono's music, which I presume would have developed regardless of the current interest in it. As these things go, interest won't...

I know that Zaire Classics series. Funny enough, it's on the very same Belgian label, Crammed, that has put out Konono #1*. Incidentially, the series was put together by Vincent Kenis, co-founder of Aksak Maboul and sometime member of the Honeymoon Killers and Minimal Compact, who also played...

UK Hip Hop - Who rates it?

On the UK hiphop tip, whatever happened after Big Dada released that Extra Yard comp? What was all that 'bouncement' business about anyway? Some good stuff on that comp tho': a relick of Roots Manuva's "Witness", some New Flesh (whose album Understanding featuring Beans, Gift of Gab and the...
