    Record design auteurism

Reid Miles designing all those beautiful Blue Note sleeves, an instantly recognizable style even if you've never seen the cover of a particular album. I really rate artists like Mati Klarwein (covers for Miles Davis -Bitches Brew, Live Evil...-, Santana, those Jon Hassell Fourth World albums...

    Errol Thompson R. I. P.

Fuck, that's sad. And here was me bigging him up in that roots reggae poll thread the other day and listening to Two Sevens Clash, thinking how great it sounded... RIP.

    Best Roots Reggae producers?

But only get to vote once, regardless of the number of choices, right? If anyone voting has a free slot, check Junjo Lawes for me, please. Such a genius, he should get at least a token vote. Seems like Striker Lee can't get a foot in at Dissensus so far... If anyone needs convincing, check his...

    Best Roots Reggae producers?

Check Sylford Walker & Welton Irie Lamb's Bread International on B&F... both Walker's "Deuteronomy" and Welton Irie's "Ghettoman Corner" are on it. (the "Lamb's Bread" and "Ghettoman Corner" albums proper are also Glen Brown-produced) Nice to see 'Junjo' Lawes as a new option, but my vote...

when was the last time a song choked u up?

I'll admit it happens with frequency, and it's usually stupid things, or very profound things. The lyrics get to me, mostly. Off the top of my head... "I wish I knew how it feels to be free" by the late, great Nina Simone, just after she passed away... Innocuous Aaliyah tracks, even ones I would...

    Best Roots Reggae producers?

Oh, man. For sheer variety and mad musical genius, it'd have to be Black Ark-era Lee Perry, closely followed by Bunny Lee. I really rate Henry 'Junjo' Lawes, though, for his bone-dry, brutally minimalist production work with the Roots Radics/High Times Band. Same goes for Linval Thompson, who...

    Who killed Indie?

Ramleh, Consumer Electronics, Sutcliffe Jugend, Con-Dom, MB... some beyond shit.

Music you are exposed to involuntarily.

@ Diaz Norteño is great, especially to work to! I really grew to love Los Cadetes de Linares doing my painting in Mexico, much better than pop radio. Banda is what I really love, though: near-cacophonous massed brass, woodwind and percussion marching band music, in 2/4 or 3/4 time but...

    schoolkids get anti piracy lessons

re.: Corporate Curriculum. From the 'Adopt-a-Classroom' program. For corporate sponsors: "For each classroom you adopt, you make a $500 donation [...] The teacher and students of your adopted classroom send letters, art work, and email throughout the school year. You may visit the classroom and...

    schoolkids get anti piracy lessons

Maybe this came out a bit wrong on my part, sorry. No, I wasn't suggesting record companies should start recruiting programs in schools, though some record execs would no doubt love the idea. This isn't new anyway: Providing underfunded schools with much-needed equipment in exchange for...

    Blogs worth a look

Damn right, minusone. I thought of a thread along the lines of "Does Dissensus = blog death?" or something like that, because it's true.

    schoolkids get anti piracy lessons

Thanks for the link, mms. All I can say is 'bloody hell'. But if it's as successful as all the anti-drugs and anti-sex talks we got as kids in school, I'm not worried... A thought. Why don't they use the money to get schools in poor districts some proper music-making equipment instead (how many...

what did you listen to today?

One advantage of living in back-a-bush is that your local wax shack still has a bunch of B&F vinyl... I'll check if he still has that Chantells. Why'd B&F quit vinyl anyway? Addendum: new B&F website launched today, will let registered users d/l full tracks (45 in total). The discussion board is...

    Help: Favela funk?

Just got this in the mail. Fucking great selection! Nothing better than skipping work on a Monday to let your house bounce to some funky do morro. Thanks Jonas, much appreciated. Can't wait to hear your East LA hiphop compilation once you've put it together, let us know.

what did you listen to today?

Right, bwoys, that Techniques comp will be purchased on sight. "the best max. pressure comp by far." That's saying something, matt! How do you rate sets like the Chantells' Children of Jah on Blood & Fire and the recent releases on Pressure Sounds: The Royals in dub and that Herman Chin-Loy...

what did you listen to today?

Thanks for the recommendations. I think only about 7 or 8 releases came out after Arleen Ruddock (Tubby's daughter) took over the studio after his death, of which the Phantom set might be one (the second volume of Soundclash Dubplate Style is another). I'd assume that quality control would have...

what did you listen to today?

That Pressure Sounds comp is ace! The Soundclash Dubplate Style ones are fantastic, too, and a great complement to the Firehouse Revolution one, with very little overlap. Brutally minimal, brilliant stuff - and Wackies gets all the credit. I wonder if there are any more releases of post-1985...
