    k-punk on kidzzz

don't get me wrong: i'm not saying i don't care about the actual people who will come after me. of course humans will continue to exist - very few people think like me, after all - and of course we should do what we can to ensure that their lives are as good as/better than ours. what i meant is...

    things you have noticed.

this picture of john knox on the wall of the world's end pub in edinburgh, which for a fraction of a second presented itself to my addled mind as some else entirely

but why does society need to evolve? what good will that evolution do? and from a purely personal (selfish) point of view, the survival of "society" after my death matters not one jot. i'll be dead. i'll be unable to care/notice. i disagree. i believe the best i can do for this small piece of...

Is the failure of New Labour tilting Britain to the Left or Right?

what else can the government expect? even if blair had single-handedly found a cure for cancer, people would hate him, principally because on the issue of iraq - which, let's face it, is the one everyone's been talking about this year - he was a pious autodidact. politics = personality these...

Mac, PC, Linux ... what are you using?

o, i agree - in normal circs it's a numbingly tedious argument, and that's why i specifically said i don't want to know why people use what they use. save us from that. but in this instance - on this forum - i think it's valid. for instance, a thread simply titled "when's 10.4 coming out"...

cor. i'm surprised there's not been more - er, any - comment about k-punk's post on tuesday: http://k-punk.abstractdynamics.org/ to me his argument is perfect. i honestly cannot see how any rational human being could disagree. i'm holding on grimly to childlessness in the face of fecundity...

    the Long Good Friday

"get carter" is one of the best british films of all time ever. in any genre. it's so remorselessly bleak. just incredible ... ... [edit] ooh, and it's on telly over the festivities. wednesday 29, channel five, 10.35pm.

    Paranoid Yet?

does anyone really think the CIA/MI5/your boss/the bloke across the road doesn't monitor half of what you do, especially online? i'm at one with my paranoia (qv the Google thread)

NME's Albums Of 2004 - This Is What We're All Up Against

ach, come on: given the state the NME is in now, it's not such a bad list. it's the usual desperate-to-please-everybody tokenistic mix, and it doesn't thrill or excite me, but i've seen far worse. who compiles that list: writers or readers? the FF album is good but massively over-rated: that...

    the Long Good Friday

i've been assured by two or three people who really know/care about film that it is absolutely magnificent. i've never seen it, but i want to. i must rectify that.

Mac, PC, Linux ... what are you using?

prompted by the firefox and x.4 threads, i thought this was a worthwhile question. there seem to be a lot of us mac users about these parts, which interests me. this is categorically not about advocacy or point-scoring or any of that: i'd like to think nobody here would stoop to petty sniping...

    Creative Genius at Walkers

well, one fine summer's day on the arran ferry (a 50-minute crossing), a friend and i accompanied two pints of bitter each with a packet of bacon fries (the scampi fry's rather less striking sibiling), a packet of scampi fries, then, er, another packet of bacon fries to finish off. one of the...

    firefox

using os x, as long as you quit and reload firefox once a week or so, it should run perfectly (the newest version - 0.9, is it? - especially). but if you leave it up all the time it starts to take ages switching to and from it (or switching users, for that matter).

    Creative Genius at Walkers

gah. it (the observer article) quotes joanna blythman. the world's most po-faced food writer. she doesn't like crisps. i mean. what kind of human being doesn't like crisps? and while i'm in a questioning mood, what happened to the uk crisp guide (used to be here: http://come.to/ukcg)?

    Teachers

hang on, though. when did discipline become synonymous with fascism? without discipline at its most basic - ie controlled behaviour, no more - you're left with anarchy. and not some philosophically pure notion of anarchy but real, practical, painful anarchy. the kind that's red in tooth and...

    Teachers

a good teacher is a thing of wonder, and i genuinely believe many - a majority - of teachers out there are hugely dedicated to their work. i know a handful myself - some close friends, others passing acquaintances - and am astounded by their cheerfulness, optimism and perserverance against the...
