    Primal Scream

Shite band. In the 90s they were dance music for people too apprehensive to dance and rock music for people too fixated on the present to just listen to the Stones.

    what are you reading now?

Just started Durrell's Avignon Quintet (it seemed like a lot of reading for $5 on Kindle). Lots of structural hijinks and some lovely turns of phrase, but also a lot of that sort of name-dropping-Englishman-abroad kind of narration that died out in the early 80s, possibly suffocated under the...

what french resturaunt should woops take his lover to?

Not eaten at either mind you. The only upmarket french restaurant I ate at was Joel Robuchon, and that closed before the pandemic. Not my tasse de thé.

what french resturaunt should woops take his lover to?

Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester or Helene Darroze at the Connaught if you want all three michelin stars. Darroze's menu looks better and is a tiny bit cheaper.

    Cronenberg does Martin Amis

Not surprised Mark didn't like him. But personally I really enjoy seeing absurd talent being exercised, even if it's purely for show. And at the sentence level, Amis was untouchable for a time. I suspect Mark also hated showboating footballers too.

    Hotels/Motels

Stayed in a few classic US motels when I took the greyhound bus cross-country in my early 20s. Now I live here, I think the mystique is if anything even greater. The country is just so fucking vast. In the UK you can't really imagine setting off on a journey in the morning, driving for a whole...

Middle age matesmanship and the pit

Got married for US immigration purposes, but we were planning on getting one of the straight civil partnerships when they became available (they weren't at the time we needed them and aren't recognized by US immigration anyway).

    Freak Waves

Second series of the Garrett McNamara/Nazare series over here in the U.S. Made during COVID, so they had to go wherever the beaches were open this time. Watched an episode last night with amazing footage shot from the tip of Justine Dupont's board riding a barrel at Jaws.

Prinz Eugen is my favorite. There are photos of people snorkeling by the half-submerged wreck that I can't look at without the feeling that 20,000 tons of rusty steel is suddenly looming behind me.

Yeah, I've spent a lot of time on Reddit looking at terrifying images of shipwrecks. I wrote something about it, but won't be so gauche as to post it here.

    K-Punk

Reminds me of submechanophobia (fear of submerged manmade objects) - a name I was recently able to put to an anxiety I've felt all my life.

No, but I've become incredibly middle-aged on the subject of coffee.

Incredibly, the same author argues elsewhere that the popularity of mock-Tudor architecture reveals a hidden English desire to return to pre-reformation union with Roman Catholicism. "That this period is writ large on the roofs and gables across the land thus indicates both yearning for home and...
