It's just a mental check externalised, it's a easy habit to get into when mixing. I remember when we switched the bass to kill buttons with LEDs on our controllers, it was a nightmare with 8 channels of audio running live as you couldn't see what was on or off.

I have some early Wizard mixes I'll try and find, they are pretty amazing, the cuts and blending had me rewinding to get to grips with how it was done, proper how the fuck moments.

It does seem a bit OCD but I think when you are spinning on 3 or 4 channels it actually helps to keep recheck your EQ lines.
