The Death Penalty – What’s All the Fuzz About?

I'm talking about fundamentalist belief- not religious belief in general That was made explicit even in the quote you extracted! It was also phrased as an open ended question... to be filled in by the reader's own sense of what a functional understanding of a religion might be. And if anything I...

The Death Penalty – What’s All the Fuzz About?

Right- but how many of these people (be they fundamentalist Islamic or Christian) have a functional understanding of their religion as we would conceive of it...? Most of them take it as an identity, constituted in terms which have little to do with religion, (or at least on obviously selective...

The Death Penalty – What’s All the Fuzz About?

Of course you are allowed to criticise Mr Tea, but you have to criticise effectively to avoid being seen as merely prejudiced- ie: precisely what Gavin has been arguing- that taken out of political context (both within the politics of Islamic states and the West's interaction with them) a...

The Death Penalty – What’s All the Fuzz About?

Not just the brown skin. But do you seriously think that most people convicted of anti-Muslim hate crimes have committed such acts on the basis of their religion? Not at all, it is on the Muslim as Other, which is labelled in religious terms but could equally be labelled in ethnic or cultural...

The Death Penalty – What’s All the Fuzz About?

But its anti religious discrimination that is based within the categories of race and culture from which the religion emanates. Hence whilst legally it has been a problem that anti-Muslim discrimination was not covered by anti-racism laws, I think it is fairly clear from whence the prejudice begins.

The worst tune on "Gentlemen..." by a long way! the synths that come in on the chorus (almost synth guitars) blaring horribly... eugh...

    Dubstep

Fair enough Caspa's actual TUNES don't sound like pubstep, (just sounds like vaguely dull dubstep) but check his myspace-- the imagery is all only fools and horses embedded videos and snapshots of LDN pubs! And its the pointless cliched cockney aggressiveness which people object to- not the...

    A Cautionary tale...

Its just an operating system- there appeared to me zero upside to "upgrading" to vista from XP (which at least works) unless you *really* want a flashy mac-os style graphical front-end.

    A Cautionary tale...

I deliberately got a new system with XP for precisely these reasons. I knew I would face issues getting my aged sound card/audio interface to work...

    This track is fucking great!

    Japan / Sylvian

Yeah, the contextualisation between music and lyric is very finely judged (ie- in this case some kind of lysergic semi-comatosed witching-hour doom electronic funeral march with dead handclaps... transforming the otherwise humdrum domestic conversation of the lyric into something deeply sinister...

Blemish is so raw I'm not sure its repeatable unfortunately. Raw in the emotional sense- its like an electro-avant garde blood on the tracks or something, although for something as bitter and angry as it is for the most part its remarkably subtle... and lyrically its a fucking masterpiece also...

    Japan / Sylvian

Snow Borne Sorrow exemplifies a lot of where Sylvian goes wrong for me- lots of great guests, elegant production, interesting time signatures, but it turns into a mush in the mix... and his lyrics are pretty banal therein.

    Japan / Sylvian

The problem with Sylvian is not "pretension" (which he's very good at...) but rather a tendency to drift towards overly lush adult-contemporary organicism. It is when he is set against his most rigorously synthetic backdrops that he does his best work (Tin Drum, Blemish etc). And hence the fact...
