Rock Music - let's be honest

Don't know how much it counts as traditional or new, but Sonic Youth's last one is a perfect two-guitars-bass-drums-vocals album. There's more music in 5 seconds of that record than in all yer Kassabians, Muses, Kaiser Chiefs, etc. A really great band absolutely on top of their game like they...

whilst goody gets it, why not the church(es)?

I take the point. As an aside, no matter who's at fault, it's regrettable that this whole business will likely leave several hundred children - who are among the hardest to place with parents, and end up at the Catholic agencies because, well, no one else will take them - are left in the lurch...

whilst goody gets it, why not the church(es)?

Thanks John. Thinking about this more last night, I probably came on a bit strong. My basic feeling is that any legislation built around how the state wants people to think is generally a bad thing, but that's not to say that there aren't exceptions to this rule (but they are exceptions). Maybe...

whilst goody gets it, why not the church(es)?

Damn right they should - and where they can most Catholics do; but it's a deeply institutionalised thing that is not going to get changed overnight - no matter how wrong it is. There is a debate beginning in the Catholic church about homosexuality, and issues surrounding these adoption...

whilst goody gets it, why not the church(es)?

That seems a pretty shakey distinction. You don't 'choose' faith in the way that you choose a sandwich, it runs quite a lot deeper than that. In a battle between colour and sexuality, would colour win? And why impose discrimination against either? Come on, that's a bit disingenuous. The law...

whilst goody gets it, why not the church(es)?

Was their disappearance due to a change in the law? (Genuine question - I don't know)

whilst goody gets it, why not the church(es)?

I mean, it's not like the Catholic church keeps its feelings on gay union to itself - you can go somewhere else, and it not like there's a shortage of kids who need adopting. There's a shortage of institutions trying to help those kids, and crappy, unnecessary laws like this only harm that cause.

whilst goody gets it, why not the church(es)?

Yeah, but couldn't be arsed to fix it. ;) Of course. But it is two completely different things to legislate that 'all adoption centres must accept gay couples' and to simply allow individual adoption centres to choose whether they want to accept gay couples or not. The former is a legislative...

whilst goody gets it, why not the church(es)?

No kidding. Ever hear of 'don't ask, don't tell'? I naturally don't agree on the Catholic church's position here but, like Rowan Williams, British Catholic leaders are in a pretty impossible position: no matter how much they might individually want to liberalise over issues such as...

No.14 out now - Ness/Hal's short history of Norwegian post-punk. Been looking forward to this one - great stuff. Here's a link: http://www.halvorsen.org/arts/music/blogariddims14 (Also, can I add to the recommendation that Hal's previous contribution (no.9) is a real grower - been listening to...

    Clothes

La Chemiserie Traditionelle, on Sicilian Avenue, Holborn. Small place, but they make a good shirt, and they're affordable (prices go up depending on the material obv). A good entry level for proper tailoring I reckon.

Dude, buy it. You can always justify a good jacket.

5'10", so I'm not exactly tall, but definitely skeletal and - honestly - Ripcurl trousers have been a revelation. Obv avoid the urban guerilla/surf hippy crossover crap, but there are some nice things cut for the slimmer gentleman. Also, tailored shirts are the business. You can get them done...

    Google Image Labeler Video Game

Love this - although reading your partner's answers can be kind of surreal sometimes, such as responding to a picture of a car by tagging 'silver' and 'blue' before 'car'.

    the flute

I think the oldest bone flutes that have been dated are from about 36,000 BC. No idea about significances attached to music making back then though.

    György Ligeti

Harmonies is great, and overlooked. I think Zacher's using a vacuum cleaner to blow air through the organ pipes on that recording, rather than the organ's own mechanism - that's why it sounds so weird.

    This Heat request

Bit of a cheeky one this, feel free to ignore... While in Tokyo recently I picked up a second hand copy of 'Out of Cold Storage', priced pretty reasonably. Excellent, I thought, and grabbed it. However, it's only after getting home that I realise that half the discs are missing: no Blue and...
