making it up, unfortunately. I *wish* I were. Looks like so much fun! I play classical piano (since I was really young, was once good, kinda outta practice but still decent), jazz sax (badly now, very much out of practice), guitar (i.e. I can play pop songs, work 'em out, etc., but don't play...

b/c "hipster" as he already established, is used in a million ways, which "body-builder" simply is not. there really is no one type "hipster" like there is "body builder".

    Joanna Newsom --- "Ys"

nomad, I think that's not really fair. 'nuff times, she's really tried to shake off this image, and has a couple of times barked back during interviews at ham-handed attempts to describe her as renaissance fair-ish, etc. Sure, it's easy enough to find some brutal press photos, but I get the...

    Reynolds' Pazz & Jopp essay

oh man, leave the thread for a few hours, and look what happens. I must admit, when this sort of stuff comes up, I'm totally in over my head, not having read much "theory" etc. But am I alone in feeling the slightest bit queasy at how real mental illnesses are used as sources for metaphors for...

hmmm. how many of y'all were around them? I sure wasn't. Well, I just was, but that doesn't count.

guybrush: when I use the term hipster in a non-music context, I'm usually referring to how someone dresses/looks (i.e. vaguely williamsburg brooklyn circa 2003 :)). When I use it w/r/t music, I usually mean something like early adopter, or up on the latest cool music, or something like that.

@gek: I try to pull off lines like "I'm entirely uninterested in "talent"" and people just roll their eyes :). re: Battles, I just found out they're playing in my town (t.o.) in May, so Sick Boy you should check'em out and see that it's not all gone to shit. As for live sampling, I've done it...

    Joanna Newsom --- "Ys"

@nomad: Not entirely disagreeing w/ you w/r/t her gender politiks, but I can't say I agree either. Could you give any examples of her lyrics from Ys that support this? (no, photos and interviews don't count...)

    Reynolds' Pazz & Jopp essay

Well, it's probably always more useful to look at it as a measure of the state of criticism rather than as a measure of music itself. In that respect, it can be pretty interesting.

GRIME- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

from this side of the ocean, just hearing about raves with D Double, Bruza, Footsie, Skepta, Sadie, Gemma Fox, MC Bratz, Tempa T sounds vaguely unreal still. When was the last time a grime MC made it to North America? Last summer w/ Roll Deep and Kano?

    Reynolds' Pazz & Jopp essay

can't quite tell if you know, but: P&J has been for years a huge critics poll, as well as having many essays too. Each critic is sent a ballot where they can vote for their top ten albums (I think they can allocate a finite number of points between 10 albums) and ten singles (similarly, I think).
