It was a tech error. Will take me, like, half an hour to write it out again. Will get around to it again soon.

i made a top 50 for you all, including extensive itemisation of what had been released and what hadn't, but dissensus deleted it.

You can get them in Australia - Leo have you looked under "Mad One".

I've decided I don't much like Champion's "Lighter" refix, and perhaps have a slight prejudice against most jungle refixes I've decided*, I find them really show-don't-tell. 2-step refixes of jungle and 'ardkore tunes generally worked better because of the utter transformation of vibe, but funky...

Would not at all be surprised. Rinse have been immensely on the ball in this regard this year (certainly more than the media!).

Great set with Marcus, Slackk. The transition from the terra danjah tune to "Find The Path" near the end put a massive foolish grin on my face halfway through reps at the gym. This other dude in front of me assumed I was checking him out, I think.

This is Marcus Nasty and Bassboy's "Drip". A classic funky tune for me, so spare yet so compulsive, everything is pure groove.

If the Last Supper's style on radio was the dominant style of funky radio sets (or was the only radio show I listened to) then I might find Topsee's presence more oppressive than I do, as it is it's just one vibe among many. In funky you'll hear the same tune in a variety of contexts (i.e...

Surprised by how many of the House Girls versions I actually recognise! Excited for this. The highlights (apart from the obv: 1, 6, Gotta Have It) appear to be 3, 9 and 10.

Before someone is tempted to strawman my argument, I'm not saying the "vinyl fetishist" stuff is not experienced by means of club (or even radio), just that it has this other important mode of reception.

The big difference between funky and grime circa 2002 is that at the same time as making instrumentals for MCs producers are also making full-fledged songs (and often it's the same producers! Screama, Champion, Naughty, Ill Blu etc.) I don't know if there were any big 2-step vocal anthems in...

Marcus wasn't against MCs or funky resembling grime per se, just MCs jumping on funky beats and passing them off as their own tracks eg. "Are You Gonna Bang Doe". When you think about it he was really trying to keep MCs the preserve of club and radio sets.

Great beats, but the vocals are like an inferior version of "People Keep Dancing" I reckon.

Anyone who hasn't yet checked that Funkystepz remix of Esthero needs to get on it, it's brilliant.

Obviously DJ sets aren't the only barometer: how could they be for tunes like "It's What You Do" or "Kiss Me"? I'm just uncomfortable with critically punishing tunes for operating by that barometer when they do.

So not my point but apparently you're more interested in being right than having a sensible discussion. It's not about prioritising DJs or deprioritising producers, it's about talking about how and why the music works. If music works in any fashion, that's credit to the producers. Do you think...

I think lots of funky tunes work really well as standalones. You complain that often they don't. I offer an explanation why. And now you're saying the producers would be pissed with me?

Hey, you're the one complaining that funky productions are too set-focused. I don't have that problem!

I mean hypothetically you could swing it the other way and say "well Night Slugs material by and large is not nearly as good as proper funky because it doesn't really facilitate MCs." And people would correctly say "that's a ridiculous argument, you're importing a standard that doesn't apply to...
