Huzzah! thanks for the heads up

Can you be a DJ and not own a label or make music?

Agreed. I think part of the reason why dubstep didn't really take off in Toronto earlier (i.e. pre-Rusko days) is because virtually every single DJ was a producer-DJ. This usually means that a large percentage of what they play is their own shit, and their friends' shit. When a genre is just...

Pointless But It Does My Head In

In North America it is really common to use party as a verb to pretty much mean getting fucked up on anything. Mostly people use it to mean drinking, since mostly people just drink. I never saw it as a distinctly North American expression before, but thinking about it now it makes sense.

    Not actually Ghostface though.

It's things like this that make me wonder what I was thinking when I decided to stay in Toronto.

Bloody hell, I know it's a bit old news now, but I just made the regrettable mistake of watching The Catherine Tate Show. What a pile of shit.

    comics

You can always tell how dorky the author/artist is by their depiction of "Things That Are Cool." It always seems to consist of people who smoke cigarettes and wear eyeliner and long black trench coats. And occasionally some sort of complicated looking cyberpunk-styled electronic accessory with...

    comics

Just finished vol.1 of Grant Morrisson's The Invisibles. It was a little poorly paced (you definitely get the impression that he tries to cram far too much into a single issue), and the premise is a little trite (teenage rebel without a cause gets recruited by gnostic secret society - peopled by...

Right, but... ...if you're swamping and overwhelming me with eclecticism, then it's your fault. Not saying you do this, in particular. Just saying that for every one DJ who plays myriad genres with obvious aesthetic connections (e.g. Kode 9) there are ten DJ's who just play a purposeless set...

Anyone know if the Kode9/James Blake set got recorded? I could do with more Kode9 sets in my life generally.

    Charlie Sheen

Wow, Charlie Sheen's UStream show is really pathetic. It's just him shoehorning in his own phrases ("winning", "warlock", "tiger blood") into as many discussions as possible. It's forced, unnatural, self-referential, and his idiot team of sycophants keep trying to make it seem like it isn't by...

rolling back to the future garage/post-dubstep/alt-funkstep/intelli-2step etc thread

Agreed. I never saw dubstep as "new age" at all. It was much too angular and dark, and had this kind of paranoid tension, like the kind you get when you walk at night through a neighbourhood you aren't familiar with. The "meditate" part seemed to me to just come from the physical experience of...

    Dubstep

No. Being critical is always important. The DMZ veterans complain because they obviously care about the integrity of the night. If we all just accepted everything unconditionally, there wouldn't even be such a thing as music scenes or cultures to even care about. Music cultures are propelled and...

    Charlie Sheen

You're complaining that water is wet! This is what meme culture does. Perhaps you forgot that meme culture is supported by an army of people sitting in their pants on 4chan all day and posting up pictures of their wieners? Charlie Sheen is a veritable goldmine for their weird project. Anyway...

Oh dear god I hope I'm not to blame for the invention of yet another "-step" moniker :D EDIT: Oh wait, that was Ory. Thank goodness for that.

    Where have the UFOs gone?

Oh I'm not saying that there aren't other lifeforms out there. I'm just saying it's not probable that they've contacted us based on the scant and weak evidence we have. That cartoon with the sheep and the dog is just silly though, because if sheep were able to communicate on that level, they'd...
