    Labour party comedy spoof, surely?

I can't speak for whichever dept you're familiar with Bassnation, but my friend's experience working at the FSA is that it's staffed by drunks (literally) with no work to do who are there only because it's too much hassle to sack them; now that is a waste of taxes. But as an honest inquiry...

    Labour party comedy spoof, surely?

I'm no Charles Clarke fan, but I doubt this will change anything. It's the civil servants that run and do the work of the Home Office who are actually to blame for the mess of freed deportees, yet they're all still in work this morning and their future knighthoods remain guaranteed and the whole...

colbert roasts bush - required viewing

Maybe. It wasn't flawless delivery, certainly. But I kind of liked the way that he stuck to his material even though it was starting to bomb. It developed from a comedy routine into an evisceration of the President and, more especially, the American media, and so it was never going to get huge...

Books you've read recently and would unreservedly recommend

Finally got round to reading Jon McGregor's If nobody speaks of remarkable things; definitely one for this thread. The language is some of the most beautiful I've read in a novel since Woolf. It's overtly poetic, but never ostentatious about it. The story's a bit trite, but actually not as trite...

colbert roasts bush - required viewing

Then why was he the only one in a room full of Washington reporters to be saying this stuff? Wasn't that the entire point - that the press corps are too cowardly to speak out properly? And I don't care what anyone says, this stuff is funny: "Now, I know theres some polls out there saying this...

    the da vinci code

I dunno, I'm quite amused by that story. The judge was great crack throughout - after a week or so he adjourned the case so he could reread the two books, then came back with a long, detailed litany of reasons why the case being brought was complete bollocks. Just tore the Holy Grail author's...

scratch-and-sniff "what hi-fi have you got" thread.

I was like that, figured my dad's old Yamaha amp/receiver was 'classic' enough to do the business. Then it packed up and I thought, what the hell, and got myself one of these (probably just below entry level audiophile, but top value) and I'm never looking back. Like having an entirely new...

    Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill

Yeah, it was the LibDem MPs who were among the first to voice criticism of the Bill and bring it to national media attention. As a party they were against it pretty much from the off. Not yet - we're awaiting details (and I can't find anyone who can say when we should expect them).

Ligeti Requiem - recording used on 2001

Yeah, it's the Kyrie from the Requiem (although it's usually just credited as 'Requiem'). Kubrick also uses Atmospheres, Lux aeterna and a bit from Aventures treated electronically near the end (this last isn't credited in the film). Certainly it's a famous piece, and I've got two version of it...

Ligeti Requiem - recording used on 2001

Hope you don't mind the plea for help - this one is for the record collectors. If anyone reading can help with information I'll be hugely grateful I'm in the middle of writing draft 0.1 for the Ligeti Requiem chapter of my thesis, and I've hit a minor snag. I'm trying to track down the...

    Bloggers remain 'in a minority'...

That's a weird headline. Broadsheet journalists are a tiny minority of the population but no one's suggesting for a minute that newspapers are over-hyped... Although I agree there's more hype in the UK without the blogs to back it up. There are some good special interest/news/campaign blogs in...

    Do you play an instrument?

I used to be pretty good on oboe  - now it just comes out about once every six months for Bach concerts a friend organises. I'm really bad these days though; can just about get by without completely embarrassing myself. :o

    Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill

Before you write to your MP, you might want to read this, published on Thursday - there are going to be some major amendments to the Bill before it comes before the House again. We're not out of the woods yet, but this is a big step in the right direction.
