(the inevitable dumb) BEST OF '06 (thread)

Concerning re-issues/archival releases, without question New York Noise Vol. 3 belongs on any Best Of 2006 list, as does Ike Yard. But you knew that already, I hope.

    Exopolitics

No, no, I wasn't suggesting that the exopolitics/Disclosure Project stuff should be dismissed out of hand, I was just offering that other link b/c so frequently quantum mechanics-related topics seem to be dragged into discussions ranging from occult, conspiracy theory, sci-fi, psychology, pseudo...

    Exopolitics

If a person is going to bring 'zero-point energy' into the discussion, one might want to add this link to the discusion, the first sentence of which reads "In popular culture zero-point energy rarely relates to the scientific notion of the subject."

    Where is Kodwo?

Thanks, Paul, perfect, that was exactly what I wanted to know. Of course if any others have additions or insights, it might be nice to hear them . . . he seems to be such a massive presence/influence on electronic music thinkers/writers/fans . . . more historical context is always helpful. :)

    Where is Kodwo?

I have a question about the chronology of Eshun's work. How influential was he by the time of the publication of More Brilliant Than The Sun? Had he been known since the days of jungle, or before, or was it with this book that he made his mark? When did people first become aware of his...

    Best shows that didn't happen

Unfortunately, no. But perhaps I will compensate for it by going one better and seeing Ike Yard, or members of Death Comet Crew, play live in the coming year. :D

    Joanna Newsom --- "Ys"

Similar band? Not really. Of all the odd, twisted, experimental, and heavy music on Skin Graft in the early 90s, Mount Shasta were one of the least interesting to me. Gravelly vocals, more straigthforward than their labelmates (at least when I saw them), not much dissonance or percussive work...

DUBSTEP- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

Very interesting interview, wish that there were more of these around - thanks, BD. The "About the Town" reports were quality as well, reminded me how much I miss reading Gutta's weekly summaries and impressions. And yeah, without question, Shackleton's mix by dubsta was one of my personal...

    Joanna Newsom --- "Ys"

I haven't heard the record after 7-Toku, but it was a collaboration with Mount Shasta, if that tells you anything. I saw Space Streakings in '95 I think it was (perhaps '96), when they were touring with Mount Shasta (whom I remember as being very uninteresting). I hadn't heard their music...

greatest bass players (or basslines) ever

His playing on Don Juan's Reckless Daughter is extraordinary, I can't imagine the record without it.

    Futures

What's the objection to them, again? (I remember that you have one, but have forgotten why.)

greatest bass players (or basslines) ever

I forgot to mention Jaco Pastorius. His parts for Joni, and also on the first Metheny album, Bright Size Life, were achingly lyrical. Sad to lose him so early.

    Joanna Newsom --- "Ys"

Hmm, this is interesting, jd_. I'm certainly no expert, but are you talking about the Space Streakings album with Mount Shasta, Shakuhachi Surprise, from 1996, on Skin Graft? I was referring to the full-length entitled 7-Toku, which was released in 1994 on Skin Graft, and has wall to wall drum...

Was jazz-fusion a dead end music genre?

The minimalist aspect of Belew-era Crimson may seem fairly obvious from today's point of view, now that Reich and Glass are practically mainstream reference points in most music conversations, though in the early '80s I'm not so sure that many listeners would have made the connection between...

    85-90

I'd give anything to have a listing of every show at the Lounge Axe (Chicago), say '88-94. On the drum machine + guitar band tip, I recently acquired a copy of Bastro's debut, rode hard and put away wet, on Homestead, 1988. It owes its existence to Big Black, basically, but there are...

Was jazz-fusion a dead end music genre?

Nah. I for one would include "The Great Deceiver" from Starless, and would probably include 21st Century Schizoid Man as well, maybe even Easy Money for laughs. :) I suppose it's heresy to say it, but I liked the three records with Belew in the 1980s. Completely different project, completely...

    Best shows that didn't happen

Not really on the scale of others mentioned, but last spring was fairly disappointing: my dear friend jason os was scheduled to spin b4 Bukem in nyc, but the show was cancelled on account of double booking; and gang gang dance were supposed to play my town, but cancelled. :(

    Magazines/blogs we DO like.

Thanks for the sampler tip, Chris. Waxpoetics is my ideal magazine, I suppose, for a number of reasons. Incidentally, one of the best interweb radio stations of which I know, is this New Orleans jazz heritage & other goodness page: http://www.wwoz.org/

    Paavoharju and Finnish psychedelia.

Any updates to add to this thread? Recent recommendations? Shows you've seen? I listened to Paavoharju's Tuote Akatemia/Unien Savonlinna EP (thanks to Don Rosco) but would like to find out more about this sort of thing.

Was jazz-fusion a dead end music genre?

Always interesting to think that Ray Shulman went on to produce Life's Too Good and Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, while brother Derek went on to do A&R in NYC, signing Bon Jovi, Cinderella, and other hair metal bands (!).
