I thought so. They were clearly, if undramatically, superior in the first half, terrible for the first 15-20 of the second. After that they ceded a fair bit of possession but looked far more dangerous than Sweden.

It looked great on first viewing and gets better with every subsequent one. Have to say that was a rarity – a thoroughly enjoyable England match. Even their complete uselessness at the start of the second half was more comical than tragic. Makes the line-up for the next match very...

So apparently head-to-head takes priority over goal difference. If Spain & Croatia ends 2-2 Italy are out, regardless of what they do to the Irish. I don't understand how Uefa gets itself into these positions.

When did Sweden last win? Last two games I remember are World Cups '02 and '06, both draws. Think Sweden won a Euro qualifying match for 2000 and drew back in England.

    Euro 2012

Maybe it's harsh, cos they've been up against some very decent sides, but Ireland look like the worst team in the tournament by a distance. (Tempted to say Sweden, though they'll no doubt redeem themselves with the traditional draw against England tomorrow).

If the Dutch beat Portugal and the Danes lose to Germany – a far from impossible outcome, especially if the Dutch maintain their second-half form – everyone's level on 3, having (currently at least) lost/won matches by 1 goal. Is it then down to highest scorer or is there some weird mechanism...

Up till first goal they looked intermittently enterprising. Afterwards it was pretty much the bus – was it 1 shot on target to France's 15? Something like that, I read

    Euro 2012

Well exactly. England pretty much parked the bus yesterday. They need 4 points from the last 2 to be confident (though not certain) of qualification, so that's no longer an option. I reckon Hodgson will be pleased to see Sweden concede two headed goals and wouldn't be surprised if this is...

    Euro 2012

One of those hindsight assessments that could so very easily have gone the other way. Holland could have scored 2 or 3 before half-time. You can't blame Van Marwijk for the best striker in the Premier League suddenly turning into Emile Heskey.

Van P was playing like Torres - terrible first touch and looked really uncertain in front of goal. Interesting game last night, despite what's now becoming standard moaning from the BBC team. Portugal's reluctance to attack is just bewildering. Boateng's tackle on Ronaldo the highlight of the...

And it's off to a flyer. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jun/07/euro-2012-holland-racist-abuse Blinder there from Uefa, right up with Panorama's colonel who insisted the sieg heils were just people pointing.

Only just realised Carrick isn't in the squad (shows how much attention I've been paying), apparently because he refused a place unless he was promised he was first choice midfield. What the fucking fuck? I never had him down as an arrogant pillock, so presumably he just doesn't fancy playing...

    Roiling football blather

But surely the whole reason they were wearing their kits was so it would look a little less weird when Terry stripped off to pose with the trophy. I mean, do you really think the other injured and suspended players would've been out there in full blue had it not ben for the skipper being banned...

Carrick's had a good second half to the season (perhaps no coincidence that this came after Utd were knocked out of Europe) and is worth his place in the squad, but I'd play Barry or Parker ahead of him. Trouble with Carrick is he's deep lying, but not a good tackler, something England will need...

    Euro 2012

Regardless of what we think about SG – and clearly he's had a poor season – that would be a terrible midfield. Two workhorses & one who looks good enough until he's up against someone decent, when his limitations are always exposed.

I know nada about the state of Dutch football, but is it even conceivable that he could leave out RvP? He's fucking genius. edit: Though I guess if you're playing Robben too, he might fight shy of two strikers...

    Euro 2012

I actually don't care at this point. Normally I'm as In-ger-land as they come, but after South Africa, taking Terry/leaving out Rio and all the rest I honestly think I'll be happy to sit through this as a neutral.(Plus the thought of Cameron affecting support for an England win would be way to...
