On the subject of speed in Jungle

this is a pretty good off-topic! (big up yrself naphta...i didn't connect the name until right now.) i've said this before, but i'll say it again: i still can't really understand why that late jump-up stuff (the self-consciously wobbly/goofy stuff like urban takeover/zinc/prisoners of...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

i think virtuosity IS important in DJ'ing (i ain't gonna lie). the trick is to use that virtuosity to bring in varying elements, different moods and textures, even beat-match records with different tempos/structures, and not to overwhelm the music, to let it devolve into the smoothed out...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

i think my ideal modern dnb dj would be mashing up the choppage stuff with like new virus records or whatever...there's room for both. that 190bpm drugged out quasi-gabba stuff has no place tho.

On the subject of speed in Jungle

i totally hold a candle for a lot of that stuff on the divide between 96/98 (when I was first getting into jungle). there were a ton of wicked tunes being made then ("to shape the future", "silver blade", "funktion", "brand new funk", "bambaataa", the grooverider mix of "share the fall", late...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

there's a paradox tune (forthcoming?...it was on that knowledge mix) on bassbin that plays that modern dillinja bass-riff against a chopped up "apache" and it actually works really well. it's almost as if when dnb works well these days its as if the two components have traded places!

On the subject of speed in Jungle

when i was musing on the "bass problem" earlier, i actually flashed on that david toop line you quoted in gen xstacy simon, something about bass returning to being "physically felt" rather than a "stun gun that hammers home the chord changes". (i'm probably brutalizing this.) the baroque riffery...

On the subject of speed in Jungle

yeah speed and space seem to be the two main funk components, at least when it comes to jungle (tho maybe to all music). after about 160bpm things stop being "funky" and just get "rushy", ala trance or hard house or gabba. (this isn't even a diss, per se. modern dnb seems like its mostly...

i wouldn't bother (at least with the pbb stuff) unless you're really feeling that oompah-oompah nu-jump-up sound.

    Wax Poetics

the "mingering mike" thing was kind of amazing. tho until i read the article i never would have guessed he was a grown man. (not trying to be offenseive...i did they same thing as a kid, and i'm just amazed at the tenacity of the man to continue on for so long.)

    The Dead C

harsh 70s reality is one of the best albums of the 90s. i also still have time for the white house and tusk. (there really is too much of it tho.) i know a few people on here actively dislike them.

daft punk - human after all

no, there's apparently a growing number who find something in it. it's still a while til i have to review it, so i'll have to live with it a while longer. maybe it will grow on me, but i'm not holding out hope.

daft punk - human after all

when certain people rally to the defens(iveness) of certain universally reviled things on ilm, i know i'm right to hate.

    Grime "essentials"

everything mentioned above plus: - lord of the decks 1 & 2 - the jammer/n.a.s.t.y. deuce magazine cover-mount mix cd proto-grime: - garage rap - so solid - f**k it but the newer stuff really is the most exciting.
