    Zizek's Leninism

the thing with language is: it's useful to have distinctions. this is not the same as having binary oppositions, btw.

    Zizek's Leninism

k-punk otm -- i can go 50% of the way towards accepting that "theory is a kind of practice", but it is still useful to have *some kind of* distinction. after all, few post-modernist academics would accept that a striking trade unionist is engaged in "theoretical work".

    Zizek's Leninism

i don't think marx was a determinist -- lenin definitely wasn't. at the same time marx sometimes thought that action was pointless. in the 1850s he withdrew from political activity. in the 1860s, he returned to active politics, but did not believe revolution was on the agenda. instead he...

    End of European Civilization

the concepts of 'rising' and 'falling' are very clumsy metaphors here. in what sense is china 'rising'? for the vast majority of its citizens, china is not 'rising'; possibly this was true during the pioneer phase of american industrial capitalism (?1870-1910?), but politically china is more...

    The Media Cool.

you can 'blame' the fact people are richer on the whole and the more the world becomes a single economic unit the more goods from more places become available.

    Zizek's Leninism

With his edition of Lenin's 1917 writings and the long essay on Lukacs, not to mention his appeals to St Paul, Zizek has surely been trying to reintroduce the idea of activism into academic Marxism. And yet here he is in 'Iraq: The Borrowed Kettle': He's been taken to task for this here...

    End of European Civilization

    the aquatic life

'bottle rocket' is grebt and finally on dvd. owen wilson is a total legend. apparently it was meant to be wes anderson's and wilson's take on 'mean streets', but it's not really anything like that. i must see 'teh life aquatic', but i wasn't keen on 'tenenbaums', it seemed a bit hermetic...

    chris morris new series stuff

i like it, but barley is completely unlike his internet incarnation, a lot less 'cool' about things. tvgh nathan would never have rapped. it's interesting bcz dan ashcroft is kind of a charlie brooker character, clearly part of what he despises, but unable to do anything but hate on his peers...

    Ludicrous racism charges

no dice, i'm intelligent and ken is still a dick. you're right that finegold and the mail are exploiting this and that they're being hypocritical and all that stuff. BUT even without turning the holocaust into a one-off event ect ect, saying that 'working as a cub reporter on a right-wing paper...

    Block the bid

i met one person who works with refugees in the area, she said there was a basically pro feeling there cos of the jobs and possibilities for housing. of course there's the danger of it going bethnal green, but there's no political alternative on the horizon that's going to do the infrastructure...
