    The Weeknd

i loved house of balloons but thursday, on first listen, is kind of tiresome...the woaaah yeaaaaah thing and the guitar and the lack of big pop hook samples...ehhhh. also pretty sure "heaven or las vegas" doesn't sample cocteau twins (at least not that song/album...or not any instantly...

    "R'n'B" recommendations PLEASE!?

oh wow, good point, i didn't even think about this. i could definitely picture sylvian/sakamoto doing "stranger", it really does have that clunkiness (in a good way)-meets-heartbroken wail.

    "R'n'B" recommendations PLEASE!?

the jojo is good but i'm not totally feeling how booming she is on top of it...aiko's version actually sounds like she's been drinking too much, it's all quiet and slurry and mumbled and she gets swamped by the beat...it has the sort of i'm-so-small isolationism i love about certain cassie...

just saw nightdreams, and there were some amazing moments - the 3-way to the weird, endless ring of fire cover; western setting with a looming skyline in the background. + the cream of wheat/wonderbread-with-a-sax housewife fantasy was so ridiculous. i laughed out loud. ultimately the lack of...

yeah definitely these two...i felt like blow out kind of dragged, so i prefer dressed to kill. also sisters. looks like a lot of other good recommendations in the last page or so, thanks. i've always meant to see silent running cause the screenshots looked so crazy...i'll get on that soon.

haha, it is stupid. but i love the atmosphere, def. the sci-fi bachelor pad. the predominance of night. and yeah the weird porn subplot. also checked out cafe flesh, which was amazing. and pretty hot, for all its quirkiness.

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

really like both of these, but yeah, they're a bit more blunt than what i'm thinking of. thanks for the list, chris. i definitely want to see future kill, virtual encounters, and cherry 2000 + will check out 42nd street...the others, i guess i should have specified the ferraro i'm thinking of...

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

i want more stuff like 52 pick up, body double, other early 80s depalma, and the less gross end of giallos...nocturnal, disjointed plots, sleaze, violence...stuff i can pair with some james ferraro and sade before and after...anyone got anything?

    dj screw tapes

june 27th is essential - it starts with a good half hour of guys freestyling over the same languid beat, and then breaks into some screw choices - tupac, steel pulse... two two liters follows a similar format - 52 (!) minute freestyle by big duck and big jut, then c-bo, 380, ice cube, and a...

    Kompakt

hah, i'm with you 100% on rainbow arabia zhao. but i think their yuppie dilettante-ism is perfect for kompakt's trimmed houseplants/vegetarian chef/hyper-anal (who could ever dance to their stuff now) latter days of course it would also be pretty horrible if they had signed some random beggars...

this was great! second the request for similar films. i'm not a foreigner but the accents sound off to me too, and i think they lend a lot to the sense of paranoia and accentuate the antagonists' villainy. also <3 vanity

questions you are dying to ask but are too scared to b/c of music nerd cred?

ah yeah i bring it up because you're talking about describing cadences. i agree it's a lot easier to review lyrical stuff, because you can focus on that in a somewhat normal literary analysis kind of way. i started out writing a lot of hyperbole/boomkat-isms, but i've been trying not to go too...
