"Showtime" and "Treading on thin ice" redux

i think Treddin' On Thin Ice deserves a lot more love than it got, especially Wot Do You Call It. It sounded great to me, but i think this is because i wasn't soaked in pirate sets and white labels before hearing it unlike most here... But i still prefer Showtime.

another punky book, another punky launch and discussion...

Has anybody read this? It looks like it could be really good...

    happy hardcore

up here, it's almost impossible not ot hear some sort of Happy Hardcore isotope on public transport between eight and ten. tinnily grinding out of shitty boomboxes and mobile phone speakers usually in the hands of the under eighteens. Can't say i'm a fan in this context... I saw a Judgement Day...

    r&b

That had occurred to me too. A weird sort of parallel between Gangsta Soldier and Soldier Soldier... Lose My Breath is/was sublime. The absolute high point for Destinys Child? Like when a plant flowers vividly for the last time just before it dies...?

    Esg

Exactly. Hence the release of Sample Credits Don't Pay Our Bills. I just figured the Car advert was to pay for Faster/Better/Harder/Stronger lawyers... I'd love to see them live - when i first heard them i was totally disorientated, it was a sort of music that i'd fantasised about but never...

    Takeshi Kitano

I wanted to catch Dolls at the cinema on it's orignal release, but they showed it like three times up here - i still haven't seen it so i'm going to have watch it squashed on TV via DVD. How about those paintings in Hana-Bi; he did them!?! The guy's a legend.

    Bullet boy

I saw this earlier and was impressed and saddened - it's tough stuff. Interesting to compare to Mean Streets which i saw on Wednesday too. Did they really subtitle Sweet Sixteen?? I don't remember that...

What PostPunk has RIU&SA make you drolly over?

I saw a Bow Wow Wow LP (Duck Rock an all) on the cheap in my local second hand store the other day but wasn't overly inclined; am i fool? Should i be dashing to pick it up? It wasn't RIU&SA inspired, but the Essential Logic compilation Fanfare In The Garden has been on permanant rotation round...

    "Pure" pop that does chart

Surely Kylie's edge in this is that she was a real semi-disposable Pop star to start with; the context for Can't Get You Out Of My Head is I Should Be So Lucky...

    electioneering

classic!! The BBC news on the night quoted TBs office spinning that the kids were booming which is "a modish, teenage expression of approval" LOL

    robots

Indeed! That makes me think pleasing thoughts of a strictly c20 avant soundtracked Fantasia... could be horrendous, but in my head it's perfect. though to give the Dis there due, the Rite Of Spring is in Fantasia isn't it? (all very off post i know - sorry!)

    Satire

Chris Morris War On Terror stuff: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,6903,668706,00.html http://chilled.cream.org/morrismirrors/smokehammer_issue_2/# i don't really rate it much myself. Surely it's telling that some of this was recycled into Nathan Barley, the suggestion implicit -...

It's on Three - track 10, before the over elaborate piracy skit.

    RDB - What!?!

Anyone else having this? I reckon it's fantastic - a Dumb Rawk Guitar lick draped in Dhol n Beatbox party strop. It's got sirens, frenzied scratching and some breakneck MCing from Rydem Ryder. There’s even a little bit of singing amongst the shouting...

Is Jackson Pollock a CIA Conspiracy?

I saw a documentary about this a few years ago. As I recall the CIA were involved with bankrolling various art institutions – I think the MOMA in NYC was mentioned – as a cute cultural prong of the Cold War, Abstract Expressionism being used as a demonstration of Western freedom in exhibitions...
