    Tagging Asylum Seekers

depends on the law, doesn't it? many of the laws that are broken every day have to do with cultural or physical-psychological/identity-based practices - intellectual property law is broken all the time because most people don't really think of ideas or music as property (often including those...

    Tagging Asylum Seekers

That's freaking nuts. So degrading. When I read the title I thought it was an exaggeration or something. These are tags that broadcast? good god. Talk about dehumanizing. Why not make them wear a big yellow "A" and ring a bell wherever they go? (and yeah, I know I'm speaking from the US and...

Jeff Chang: “Why has nothing replaced hip hop?”

since way before PC liberalism (did that occur outside small private liberal arts colleges which btw are not bastions of hyper-testosterone hiphop), women's bodies have always been a kind of symbolic territory for men to express their power, nationalism etc by trying to control/assert power...

    Bay Area Rap

I am. but then I live here. heh. But NOTHING beats dropping that in the middle of a breakcore set. People fell over! Most of it's at around 100ish so it breaks up the 100/200 stuff nicely. I did end it with Electromeca and Shadow+Keak the beats. and the flow ... and it is awesome how they are...

ursula rucker on the 'ho-erisation' of hip-hop

don't really have much to add, I think y'all have covered most of it.. but is it because she's talking about music that she is associated with that somehow her own art is supposed to cure the problem? Her art doesn't add to the problem she's addressing, even if it doesn't make the sexist crap...

Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Greensleeves Vampires

"It's not about the money. It's the principle."

Del Monte in Guatemala. Colluded with government death squads. Come to think of it, I think that's where I first learned the phrase "death squad." Lots of corporations in Colombia - Occidental Petroleum, Drummond (in 2002!) Unionists at Mercedez Benz plants in Argentina were "disappeared" in...

    METAL! Discuss

Yes. Metal. Sort of fell into it sideways from hardcore, partly because I liked the rythms of that riff-heavy stuff. Kind of went from NYHC to Helmet, and then back into Slayer, Sepultura, Metallica and the like. I listen to some of the Scandinavian stuff as well these days. back then (late...

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

This is rather less highfalutin, but I would recommend Nochnoy Dozor (Night Watch) - the russian vampire apocalypse movie. For the details as much as the big stuff.

    Octavia Butler died

I heard the day after, and have been bummed out all week. I like Dawn best, of all her stuff. Found it pretty challenging and disturbing and fascinating. Not as into her Clay's Ark series, although they are still pretty interesting. She was a great mind and a great writer. I got to see her...

well I'm not on first name (?) basis with him (?) but actually come to think of it the cat in dimmu borgir sounds a bit more raspy and cookie monster's got a bit more rumbly bassy depth.

DUBSTEP- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

some other folks and I (in the US) all got screwed by them bigtime.. insanely slow order, sick expensive shipping costs to the US, dodgy communication. sad, since they had the best selection, but not touching them again i think. Haven't found anyone to compete with them selection wise, though.

On the ragga side, check the label Press Up Records , a lot of good stuff coming out there soon, and Mashit of course. (labels sound like a cooking class). There's a cat called ERS-1 part of the Raggabot crew who makes some amazing tunes that I think aren't yet released except on his own...
