enjoy! WORD TRADE Book Launch Event 8/8/23

I wish that had been on the front cover. I liked the middle sections the best. For me they were the ones where there was an attempt to appeal to the ear and the heart. I find some of the smaller ones too sealed, too impenetrable to dig out much. But that’s my problem - much as I can’t get much...

    Choon of the Day, redux

Their album The Care had All Lined Up and My Spine which both deserve to be better known.

    Ulysses (1922)

On my way to Vienna from Paris I’ve stopped off in Zurich. I expected a few more memorials considering Joyce lived here for so long. A plaque on a house he lived in for a year, a bit on a wall where the two rivers meet and his grave.

    things you have noticed.

I saw him in the Algerian Coffee shop in Old Compton St once. Desperate to be recognised. I didn’t oblige. My wife said, as we left, ‘Did you see that really ugly tall bloke in there?’ Oh how we laughed when I told her it was Will Self.

Yeah. That Netflix series on last year’s TdF has an episode focusing on Pidcock and his descent to catch and overtake the break before stomping up Alpe d’Huez. He really did push that to the extreme.

Mader dying at Tour de Suisse has been a real wake up call. There are now nets like they have in ski-ing and better animatronic signage. A youngster died last week on a descent, I think. It’s a real worry. My older son races and sometimes I would rather not know what goes on in the peloton as I...

    Revisiting Citta Violenta

I didn’t think @craner could drive. It seems beneath him somehow.

    Are you tracking your performance?

Just saw this on Twitter. I don’t know this Mark Grief, his book is called Against Everything

    Are you tracking your performance?

Yes. HR strap. Power meter. It’s all about the data.

    what are you reading now?

Agota Kristof’s Notebook Trilogy - one of the best things in ages. Each book in the series totally undermines the previous. It’s really about dysfunction caused by extreme events and an inability to tell the truth in a society - Hungary during the war and then soviet occupation - where so much...

    making things bad on purpose

EasyJet (others too but my experience is with them) - an airline that frequently runs late, has no staff on the ground with which to interact, all communication via an app which glitches all too often, cancelled my fucking flight and left me stranded and falsely offered me accommodation (when I...

Of course the actual answer to this thread are DH Lawrence’s novels - his poetry and short stories are exempt.

    Writers you hate

I’ve written elsewhere about my hatred for McEwan - whom I’m guessing is low hanging fruit on Dissensus. Other writing I’ve hated recently - Missouri Williams The Doloriad which garnered loads of praise but was just grim, rambling and sub sub Kathy Acker on a bad day. And Isabel Waidner - again...

The Republican War on Transgender People, Drag Queens, and Queerness in General

No, you have misunderstood me, I am not interested in what you have to say. What I’m saying is go create a thread where you want to argue the theoretical toss - go be a cunt elsewhere - and leave this thread for highlighting the shitty lived experience of a whole bunch of people who are being...
