i liked it better the old way because it weren't necessarily the book smart people who could say things in the school yard. the book people had the comfy home with nice parents but couldn't necessarily compete in the schoolyard. nowadays the book smart people can have it all.

what used to seperate people in the schoolyard was if you were one those who could say things spontaneously or one of those who would come up with them later lying in your bedroom. that ability, which we called charm, seems more or less purged of the massive value it used to carry.

a large theme for people entering their 20s nowadays is finding/constructing a high school analogue where they can be the cool kids

incredible how serious people have started to take hauntology. if we were to kidnap luka and marinade him for a weekend in the right combination of acid and sunshine, i'm sure he'd emerge with a framework with art school student mileage to rival fishers. sadly we don't have that ambition

I got nothing from Mirror. Have to re-watch in a more receptive state.

What is it about Stalker, though, what makes it enamate intensity like it does? It's beautiful and philosophical and all that but that doesn't begin to cover it does it? Watching it feels like taking a point of no return step forwards in human consciousness.

Solaris has some great bits as well but Stalker is the best of his no doubt. In his book he talks about people writing him scornful letters after seeing Mirror, calling him a bad communist and all these things. I recommend reading his thoughts on art and cinema. He's a tender, thoughtful...

but also worrying. the clever bits just slipping through your fingers, dissolving again after crystallizing. it's supposed to stick so you can build on it, isn't it?

I've always liked genre. Ideally you would say that it's good as long as it's descriptive but I think it's alright as a prescriptive influence as well if the alternative is no genre. There is energy in singularity, opposition, friction and even dogma. For me, the mush signifies entropy.

a lot of these seem to hinge on a sort of re-appropriation of insecurity markers. like the excessive qualifying of whatever the actual content of the tweet is done in this affected manner. what is that about?
