If it’s online check out the David Tennant RSC version it’s quite moving at the end as he realises the games up and this political operator has out manoeuvred him totally.

    The Waste Land (1922)

I’ve got an audio version of Four Quartets read by Ted Hughes which I think works really well, he’s got that bardic thing going on

    The Waste Land (1922)

Watched it and really thought it did a good job. Lyndal Gordon particularly engaging. Obviously a 90 minute film will never do the poem justice but I guess for many it gave a way in

    Roiling football blather

I do remember watching that match live on my portable tv in student accommodation and saying out loud ‘fuck off!’ In bewilderment.

There’s a school of thought that says that as he progresses Shakespeare becomes more interested in the outsider who doesn’t come back into the fold - Hamlet in some ways is one such character. the other thing about All the world’s a stage is the theatrical effect runs counter to the words - he...

If you’ve done the Henry IVs then you should do RII as a prequel. WT is one of my favourites- very experimental in terms of shape and structure. Measure is good in performance but hard on the page. AYLI might feel quite light after A&C but is a lovely play. RIII is always worth it - it’s the...

Physical acts of genius [sports gods]

    Jean-Jacques Rousseau

JJR mentioned in Stanbridge that I’m reading: “Rousseau wanked like caged bear in comfort of himself from the moment he discovered his great gift.’

Going old school as it’s the only complete set of all of them that I have: the Moncrieff and Kilmartin revised by DJ Enright - I have read the Lydia Davis volume 1 in the past which was ok but not as good as her Bovary. I’ve said it before but Pinter’s in filmed screenplay of Proust is quite...

My Mind to me a Kingdom is - Paul Stanbridge. It’s likely to appeal to Sebald fans He circles around his brother’s suicide, bringing in history, geology, arcana and all manner of other sources. Written in a rather meditative manner, it’s catnip for me, it’s one of the best things I’ve read this...

    In Liz We Truss

Canning at least died in office and wasn’t booted out - although he did help split the party. Like Truss he had been Foreign Secretary but unlike her he appears to have been quite competent…and he had a duel with Castlereagh which meant they could never serve in the same cabinet together.

    Ulysses (1922)

I’d recommend David Collard’s Multiple Joyce for those who might be Joyce averse. I think it’s great at what Joyce has to offer without being overly reverential

    Dissensus driving school

i learnt when i was 32 - definitely harder as an adult especially that humiliating feeling of stupidity when you stall in traffic or balls up and the instructor has to apply the brakes. I took quite a few lessons but did pass first time, like @john eden i dont have great hand to eye coordination...
