Notes from a suburban raver - DannyL's list

You sure you're not thinking of Dingwalls? Could've been Electric Ballroom though tbf. Dingwalls was pretty famous for those kinda tunes. I can still imagine IDJ/Jazz Warrior guys doing ludicrous dancing to this sort of thing.

I actually have quite a taste for free stuff so was very happy with the moments of dissonance on this, though it interplays pretty cleanly with a standard song structure here. 31. Carlos Garnett - Banks of the Nile

Notes from a suburban raver - DannyL's list

I have to mention jazz as an influence. A couple of my mates were regulars at Dingwalls Sunday sessions. I never made mostly due to a fucking stupid annoying job I had on Sundays. This is one of the selections I recall from them. Dedicated to the wonderful Flora Purim. I thought she was on this...

Yeah I was listening to it for a few years prior though. I actually wrote to Gordon Mac at one point probably still got the letter somewhere. Kiss was always the best of the pirates, at that time anyway.

Third has just reminded me that I meant to put up this track. 29.Nitty Gritty - Under the Moonlight Just another example of those crazy creative fantastic sounding reggae tunes you chance on when you're a bit tuned in.

I definitely heard steppers and roots shows, Kiss has Joey Jay and Mannaseh. I think they were white guys but they were still good.

"I can have my stoner fantasies but don't have to actually listen to black people" it sounds like.

Yeah true. The counter-culture I guess. Took the legal world years to catch up.

    SHAKA R.I.P.

Saw him in January in what I now assume was his last UK gig. Was funny, I thought I'd leave at like 2, being old now, but we stayed 'til 5 just 'cos it was so fucking great.

Notes from a suburban raver - DannyL's list

It's funny, I remember actively hating white music so much at the time, being really furious if like I saw Dire Straits on the telly. Funny how time elides these attitudes. I think at the time it was true, there was something to be angry about, in terms of representation, you had to tune into...

Yeah me as well. But it's interesting looking back, what's stayed with me. I think I was lucky to get that great grounding in great soul, rap, reggae and house.

This is 100% true. I didn't start listening to anything else until I started reading NME which I only did for the hip hop coverage.

Thing is, when I was growing up, punk wasn't even on the agenda. Why would you listen to rock music or any variant thereof? Unless you were basically a nonce. @IdleRich said to me at some point after we'd met "black music is better than music by white people isn't it?" And he was right.

Nottingham at Uni. Mostly listening to deep house. I'd put some tunes in this list if I could remember any of the names.

    27. Tyrone Taylor - Sufferation This is one of the incredible steppers tunes I remember hearing played by Joey Jay (Norman's brother) on Kiss bitfd. Weirdly enough, I went to Shaka like 2 months ago and this was the first tune I heard as we walked in.

I was branching out into listening to reggae at the time. This is kinda my heritage but my Dad left the island before reggae took off, so it was always a secondhand knowledge. One of my favourite LPs of all time. 26. Fever Grass Dub - The Upsetters
