    is the news fundamentally conservative?

I don't think it's deniable that immigration is beneficial by standard aggregated measurements. Evidence about wage pressures on low pay jobs is definitely more mixed and open to interpretation.

    Running

Lots of great points, but people who are trying to be healthy make great consumers. Hempseed trail mix bars, electrolyte tablets, kewl techy running clothes etc. People posting the runs they've just done on facebook seems to have been a new horror for my timeline this year; I can't quite...

    michael gove

This may sound bad, but as a student we did a similar thing with Great Expectations for KS3 - that was over 20 years ago. I'm just saying.

    Hipsters: Scourge or Irrelevence

I think we can all agree those sound like bad people, but I don't see a colon after hipster. The young Scandis do often dress quite hipster whilst having pretty middle of the road tastes in music. I was in Aarhus (Denmark's 2nd City) for a few weeks recently, and then Copenhagen for a few days...

    Hipsters: Scourge or Irrelevence

Double-monk (straps) Single-monk (straps) Theory states that they are a little more versatile than Oxfords/Derbys i.e. they go better with a pair of jeans, whilst still remaining suit-friendly. There's metal which arguably needs to be matched up with any belt buckle, cufflinks or, god...

    Hipsters: Scourge or Irrelevence

I think double-monks are kinda done-to-death now, which I guess makes me more hipster-than-hipster. Despite being a Scot, I prefer Donegal to Harris Tweeds :-) #menswear is a lot bigger than any scene though, it's British (and American) men buying their own clothes en masse and not looking like...

What the blinkers is wrong with being a hipster?

"The issue I've always had with what I perceived as hipsterism was its frequent contempt for those who other people who are not hipsters - although this isn't universally true and those hipsters who don't project contempt, I've had no problem with." I largely agree with this - the idea that...

What the blinkers is wrong with being a hipster?

'Shoreditch Twat' and 'Nathan (Barley)' were used in the first few years of the century. It's really around 2008/9 I think that the term 'hipster' caught fire.

What the blinkers is wrong with being a hipster?

That's arguably one aspect of hipsterism, but it's probably not true of all 'hipsters'. Hipster as insult I think has a lot to do with class, capitalism and privilege; things that we're definitely not allowed to talk about - so there's part of me that resists the drive to render it unsayable...

    I joined a Gym

If you're in an empty gym with lots of equipment easily to hand, then free-weights are a good choice. In a busy gym, I think they have their uses and they can potentially be more time efficient. The pulley machines are in many ways the best of both worlds.

    Nick Land and Neocameralism

On a less intellectual note, I was in the same form class at school as Douglas Murray for 3 years, before he got a Choral scholarship to Eton. Hasn't changed much really.

    So, Lily Allen then...

That is probably a fair point as far as it goes.

    So, Lily Allen then...

The execution is bad, we can agree with that. But the idea is hardly novel or new and.....well, there's nothing wrong with biting the hand that feeds you - but she's not really biting down hard is she?

    Beer And Beer Drinking

The Kernel's London Sour isn't sour enough for me, having tasted a lot of the Brodie's Sours. Weird Beard brew in Hanwell, where I grew up, so I cannot help having some affection for them. Their Black IPA, Fade to Black, is pretty win and their Coffee Milk stout, Black Perle, is good too. Not...

Where should I eat in London?

I got family staying the night in a hotel near London Airport on Monday Night - any idea where to take them for some decent food. Rather not take them too far, and preferably not any further east - I guess this means Canning Town, as I doubt Canary Wharf has anything. Any tips appreciated.

    Definitive UK Curry House Throwdown

I ate at Brilliant's this evening in Southall. Was on my own deciding to get lost after working in Uxbridge and the tubes getting messed up. Didn't get to seriously do the menu, but the pickle tray was serious business and the Chicken Methi on the money. Roomali Roti and Bhatura nice breads...

    Beer And Beer Drinking

The keg beer, especially from key-kegs, often costs more for a reason, not *necessarily* because the margins are significantly higher. The Evening Star swear blind that they often put on kegs where there's barely any margin at all. The Old Coffee House on Beak Street in Soho now has 5 Brodies...

    Beer And Beer Drinking

Kernel make good beer, no two ways. Enjoyed their 2.9% Table Beer immensely. Magic Rock's 'Salty Kiss' is the perfect Summer beer - a little fruity, a little salty. Just unbelievably good.
