I’m currently sitting in the back bedroom self isolating waiting for a PCR to return, I should really just get on with it and watch the fucking thing shouldn’t I?

    The Cantos

I will if @luka misses anything. This current exchange has made me hanker after the summer when I was deep into Pound.

I don’t think any language can be self sufficient- the Academie Francais may try to police ‘foreign’ words entering a language but it’s a pointless stance.

I don’t know how you’d define wide/deep - all languages do their jobs none are deficient because intrinsically all humans need language to do the same thing. Whichever language they’re using.

Huge in comparison with many others - the lack of obstacles for embracing and creating new words, including no standard spelling system, allied with rampaging colonialism/exploitation means it has a ridiculously large lexicon.

English is essentially a branch of German just with a big slab of French vocab however by losing the case and gender systems of the Germanic languages it means syntax is much more important- the relationship between the words dependant on their order rather than via endings etc. The subtleties...

Autumn BY T. E. HULME A touch of cold in the Autumn night— I walked abroad, And saw the ruddy moon lean over a hedge Like a red-faced farmer. I did not stop to speak, but nodded, And round about were the wistful stars With white faces like town children.

    Joan Didion (1934 - 2021)

I didn’t say you’re not polite and I’ve no real idea what you think your reputation is. I just make it a policy on here not to really argue with people who hold entrenched ideas opposite to mine. It doesn’t get anywhere. It’s really not my job to change anyone’s mind.

    Joan Didion (1934 - 2021)

I don’t really want to have a row about it - I just think she’s a really great writer and I’m not in the mood to go back and forth with someone so clearly opposed to that point of view. The world is large enough for both of us to disagree and remain polite about it.

    Arcadia

Yep even Hesiod knew that. Doesn’t stop the yearning though - whether it’s Tom and Barbara in The Good Life or Virgil’s Eclogues.

    Joan Didion (1934 - 2021)

I’m not going to waste time trying to persuade you I know the general tenor in recent months is to trash reputations of anyone considered to be good so I shan’t be engaging in a discussion on this but I think Didion has been poorly represented here. I am a big fan, read pretty much her entire...
