I think soft sciences are generally academic fields where society is treated like a piece of technology, and I dont think that's the correct approach. you can look at these things in the way econ does, but you're fooling yourself into thinking that a formal model can provide the answers

personally I dont even like the idea that it's a soft science

and economics even with its flaws can provide that, but it is flawed

but I agree ofc that it's useful to have a model of how all of the various moving parts in the economy relate

yeah the basis of the field is really modelling social welfare as a mathematical optimisation problem. so you can offshore difficult moral problems about the distribution of resources onto an apparently objective formal system.
