I get the impression that certainly Franz Ferdinand (from people who know them professionally) view themselves as a pop act, rather than anything really alternative. Don't really know about the other major players... I see "Commodify your Dissent" is still relevant today as it was 10 years...

    hip-hop, where to begin?

What do you think of the Vast Aire and Mighty Mi record? I had hopes for it, but can't really seem to get into it. My fave Def Jux LP has got to be Mr Lif "Phantom", especially those Edan produced tracks... I guess it's that old-school-but-new-school sound that they have.

    iphoto wackness

Arg. I'm really pissed of with iphoto. Im using version 2.1 (that came free with my ibook), and despite Apple's supposed claims that it sorts photos by the date they were taken, it insists on sorting photos ive imported from a PC by the date they were modified, not taken (iphoto itself will...

    The GAY rapper/HIPHOP question

Someone I knew who worked for Puffy said that he was gay, and had a "secret" boyfriend hidden away somewhere...

    this seems wrong to me

Shabba? Skibadee? (Mentally picturing K-Punk battling on the mic and getting a reload as he explains why BSP are rubbish).

    this seems wrong to me

I'd take either them over your warm piss, mate. :p

    this seems wrong to me

British Sea Power are one of the best British indy bands of recent years; certainly streets ahead of most of the mainstream. Both their albums are great, but they seem to have lost a bit of their intensity live.

"the appeal of these bands is the way they've been marketed - i've not said there are no alternatives as there are. But this stuff is the most heavily and directly marketed music for ages - just a cursory glance at the nme and this is clear." Yup, and I'm suggesting that there might be a...

    Maximo Park

The problem with all this is that I'm guessing non of us went to those early Libertines gigs etc. And you readily admit that your evidence for the marketing of the music comes from "cursory glance at the NME". I'm not denying that the NME doesn't heavily push bands of a certain ilk, because they...

    Maximo Park

Do you really think that this is the only reason that indy bands have been a success? Because the kids are forced to listen to them, and there's nothing else? Certainly, there are other reasons. The whole Libertines and their spawn (The Others, Art Brut, Paddingtons etc) seemed to be trying to...

I quite like them. And I'm not going to give any sort of defence for it, I just think they make nice catchy tunes. Is this going to be another indy hating thread? It's such a boring topic...

Armando Ianucci's The Thick of It

I forgot about that... is it online anywhere?

Halloween Tunes... What Would You Drop In A Halloween Dj Set?

This reminds me of of my first DJ gig outside of people's houses... playing at a university halloween party in Cambridge. My friend, who sorted it out, decided I should play dark hip-hop, jungle etc, but no one put what kind of music it was on the posters. I had a horrible night fending off...

    the politics of "peak oil"

Good article in Mute magazine by George Caffentzis with a critique of what he calls " the Peak Oli/National Security Paradigm" http://www.metamute.com/look/article.tpl?IdLanguage=1&IdPublication=1&NrIssue=29&NrSection=10&NrArticle=1480

Pr0n - what is it good for?

I've often had Alan Moore's "V for Vendetta" described to me as "anarchist porn", but not in the sense we're talking about here... ;)

    cassette swap

This sounds cool, I'll play. Although I can't guarantee my tape willbe any good. What would upset the most? 90 mins of Sigur Ros? ;) Another idea would be passing-the-tape version - one person records their mix, posts it of to someone, who listens, reviews and writes about it (on a blog, say -...

    The Oil Age

Another quick SF link in the chain, to bring us back to Woebot's original post - I just finished Iain M. Banks' "The Algebraist" (not that great), and in passing one of the character's refers to this time on Earth as the "Age of Waste". As for biofuels, the problem with that is of course it's...

    Achewood

yeah, achewood is deep once you scratch the surface. Some of the story arcs are incredibly wierd, hilarious and poignant. and once you get onto the blogs... Ray's entry on "the rockstar died at 27" party is one of the recent gems.
