That's not fair of course. A few of them are quite good. Midnights children is as bad as saul bellow though.

I dont really get Bolanos scathing criticism of magical realism though, because the worst bits of Dark Star seem to come very close to it. Maybe he just hates himself

Most authors probably do hate themselves. But yeah, I set less than no store by literary (and film... music etc) awards. Of course sometimes they pick a good winner but that's just inevitable by statistics.

I think Cormac McCarthys The Road was the last prizewinner I bought. Really dreadful. They should have been confiscating it not celebrating it

In my head, you and droid are now squaring up against each other and I'm one of several boys standing in a circle around you, chanting FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!

I liked The Road. The film was weird though with all that incidental music completely taking you out of it at times.

I was so angry with it. It was my flight reading that I bought at the airport, so I had to watch a romcom instead

Something about McCarthy rubs me the wrong way and I've never even read him. I groan whenever I see Blood Meridian mentioned or some po-faced quote pop up.

An aside... but Roman Holiday or... er, some other good ones are rom-coms, what happened to that genre that it became a complete and utter (unfunny) joke?

I feel the same way about Thomas Pynchon

By that I meant to say - I've never read him. I'm against him (vaguely) in principle. I'm a deeply conservative person in all sorts of ways, as Luka would tell you.

Pynchon Vs McCarthy = Autechre vs Roc Marciano
