Been trying to work out which Nicolai to track down.

I've found Conte Dracula here:

The record I think I'm after is this one:

The Marquis De Sade soundtrack which Johnny Trunk remarks of in the latest round-up he's done four our magazine FACT:

"This record has been in every chart I've ever done"

My friend sold a copy of this to Jerry Da**ers for a huge amount of money. I'd be happy with a CD, but don't think it's been reissued.

I saw this one recently:

but it wasn't all that. Quite a straight orchestral score, not the loony shit I'm after.

Also Jim Daze did me one on CD (can't remember what it's called) which was pretty good.

His score for Jess Franco masterpiece "A VIrgin Among the Living Dead" is incredibly beautiful and in my top ten scores ever. Never reissued on lp or cd i think, only listened watching the movie. Someone should reissue Nicolai!!!!

I saw that Nicolai record with the Alpine cover in reckless, looked kinda straight so I'm glad i passed it up. It is a depressing fact that not much interesting stuff makes it out onto 'the floor' these days. As you were saying Matt internets where it's at. Totally drooling over that 'Marquis De Sade' cover.
Have you checked out this site www.moviegrooves.com they have got loads of stuff.
That l.p I got is 'We Still Kill The Old Way' it is a collaboration between Nicolai and someone else whos name escpaes me now, cracking 'giallo' type stuff though....

Ummm, why are these records any good?

Aren't they just soundtracks to dull soft porn films with covers that are amusing for five minutes?

I like b-movies of any kind but those soundtracks are great music even outside the context of the film. Nicolai and Morricone were classical trained genious musicists, and Umiliani were a great jazzist, but in Italy you can't earn enough to live making contemporary or jazz music, so they entered the film soundtracks circle in a moment were a lot of film were made of every genres (the '60 and the '70) both for a) making some money to live; b) see their music realized in some way: soundtrack to b-movies, horror, soft sexy, thriller etc. can be very experimental (and so can sometimes also be the film) and also Morricone and Nicolai have a great gift also for great melodies that often where the "main title theme" for the film. They (with some exception) didn't have any power on the quality of the films they scored, but that doesn't mean that they provided crap music, they provided often the best music they can, since there was also the possibility of issuing it as a LP soundtrack.
And anyway there is dull "soft porn" and great "soft porn", like there is dull "art cinema" and great "art cinema".
