yeah sounds a bit crazy. another that it was wind moving over a hill and making patterns.

Yes, lots. Or at least there used to be, before they started getting really huge and ornate. Lots of examples of very small circles forming part of a larger design which are isolated in an area of unharmed wheat, several feet away from the nearest tramline (tractor rut).
