what speakers do you use?

i used to have some big vintage wharfdales from the 70s but theyre too big for where im at at the moment so have put them in storage. using a not great but not at all bad old aiwa hi-fi pair (well one aiwa one and one smaller one from some other pair cos the other one broke) at the moment which is fine, but im looking to sell the wharfdales and get some more modern ones i think, preferably with some good bass response so i can attempt to replicate plastic people in my own room need to find out some good ones though, hopefully that arent too pricey. what do other dissensians use?

Ive always been happy with Mission speakers. Really good on bass response. Ive got a pair old (about 15ys) floor standers cant remember the model and they are a big sound and produce a fair amount of sub bass too. Two woofers, tweeter, rear and front ported.

Also Mission shelf speakers round at my Dads in my old room which are ancient but sound ace.

I dumped a pair of Tannoy Mercury S like those below day before yesterday. I'd found them in a skip when pissed years ago, just after winning a pub quiz in Primrose Hill and then being stopped by the police who wanted to know if i'd seen a couple 'fighting with knives and forks' in the immediate area. I relied on a pair of Missions before that which got trashed in a lemon halves and weetabix fight.

i have a set of tannoy's (i painted them teal), mk2's, they respond nicely.

Everything sounded Aztec through them, at first.

They were held together with sellotape by the end, so they struggled with bass.

Using Quad 21L's - although these days most of my listening is through headphones. The Quads are really accurate, but the low end drops off fast... I've added a BK sub to try and flesh out the deeper side of things, but to be honest they aren't merging too well. Of course, it really depends on the amp you are using.

I use these cheapo Spirit Absolute 2s, gottem years ago, i never get tired listening on them and they have a clear flat sound,

If I was to buy again i'd probably get Hafler or Dynaudio.

No sub but don't need it most of the time

I think I just want bigger and better Genelecs now. Would really like a Genelec surround system. Pricey though

Those Quad 21Ls are nice. Good looking system. I'm getting less interested in "hifi" now, I just think you get better performance out of studio monitors.

Yeah I know - I just can't get too excited about all that stuff, probably because you took me down richer sounds 15 years ago and that has all served me extremely well right up til now!

So I don't really have to worry about it

Going back to the original posters question; cheap bass - Bang Diddly mentioned Mission and I just remembered, they did this great pair of multi-coned things a while ago now, Mission 753's.

The quality wasn't brilliant on them but they did hit the low levels, they certainly looked the part. You should be able to get them dirt cheap these days, a pair on fleaBay going for £200 at the moment - probably get them even cheaper than that.

I used to share a house with a hifi nerd and bought those Mission's, Rega Planer Turntable and a Nackamichi tape deck all for £250 (about 10 yrs ago) cos he wanted to update his system. But if I did need to replace anything I would get something cheapish with some red stars next to it from Richer Sounds - that hifi enough for me.

My set up is more or less down to an I-river mp3 palyer, Mission speakers and a Kenwood amp nowadays.

well these are your boys, as i've tested them against other speakers, and for me they come out better, warmer more detail and they can hold quite dramatic sound.
kef are like a luxury specialist hi fi production company but they did this midrange coda range in the 80's - all the speakers are still handbuilt to a high standard and really pretty good.

agreed - I took a risk on a set of the 734 on ebay, they must be at least 12 years old
got them for 40 quid and they are perfect,
that said the amp CAN make a huge diff, I had a Wharfedale amp which was OK
but then I was given an old Cambridge Azur 640A and whilst 'less' powerful (less RMS p/c than the Wharfedale) it absolutley fucking sings amazing sound and if it packed up tomorrow would buy another in a heartbeat

yeah cambridge amps are very nice.
