I think Leo may have been being sarcasticYou're both mad - it's all about the way leadbelly sings the word 'shiver' and that dead-eyed delivery that make it so cold and powerful and haunting, I could never call it 'slick'. I do like Cobain's version actually for its intensity and the cathartic release when he starts screeching, but that means it loses that sense of sustained latent fury and forboding that make's Leadbelly's so special.
Plus just the fact the recording is so old gives it that extra layer of creepiness (I posted it on the gramaphone thread)
