I like how they've got less to do with distance than with direction. NYC and Sao Paulo are almost 5,000 miles apart, yet only a one-hour time difference.

we've got a half-dozen states that are split between two time zones, that must be fun.

I was talking about this with my rum drinking partner tonight - a common problem when learning programming language is being tasked to write a "calendar" program, but it's always a trick question because whoever set the task expects you to be ignorant of the change of change of Gregorian to Julian ( in western culture ), and even then that ignores the fact that other cultures, like, for example, China, use a lunar calendar, and at Eid our Islamic friends have to figure out when they can break their fast depending on which Iman they follow, because, let's face it, it's all made up, it's all a hack resulting in "leap years" and shit because our artificial measurements are just a fancy

I've had this same thought. It seems like when I glance at a clock, a whole host of forces begins to act on me. My entire state-of-mind changes. I am no longer in the now and instead are preoccupied with the future and also the past. I start to feel guilty as my own individual sense of time is replaced by society's, the man's scientific and objective sense of time which I wasted watching three hours of anime


“Time” as counted, measured, tracked, and obeyed exists because each of our individual phenomenological senses of time can be quite different, and in a world obsessed with efficiency this cannot do. But it's also suffocating as hell to constantly be checking the time. time checking is the manner in which society imposes itself on the individual. in my eyes, the free individual is an individual that is free from checking the time. i should delete all my clocks.

What is interesting to me is how difficult (borderline impossible) it is to get rid of them, while at the same time I am almost certain it would not be too hard to function without much friction with the society.
You could easily live in your own time cycle (ie. La Monte Young's 33 hour day/night cycle), with a few alarms set up throughout the day for certain activities that require synchronization.

To live without the need of any time measures apart from the sun rising and going down would almost seem like a luxury.

On a practical note: I got as far as jailbreaking my phone and there were a couple cydia tweaks/flex fixes for removing the clock or replacing it with given text, though:
a) most of them were from pre-2010 and did not work
b) they only affected the clock on the widget on top of your screen, leaving out the lock screen clock

I might take the task on again eventually, if I happen to become a bit more well versed in jailbreaking.

the most/only enjoyable thing about our 10 days without power after hurricane sandy was having no reference for time, once your phone and laptop died. you ate when you were hungry, went to sleep when you were tired, woke up whenever. liberating.
