This should be in the nerd credibility thread, definitely, but what is the difference between house and techno? Mad to be even asking in public lol but I can easily rhyme off the intricate roots and origins, the sub genre within sub sub sub genre, bore the arse off people on the difference between New York and Jersey, Craig and Atkins, Berghain and Tresor. I know this is house and that is techno but still don't know why. There has always been certain leanings running through each but they were never exclusive to or defining of either. The palette, tempo, cues and feeling have always been completely changing and interchangeable to me so what actually is the distinction?

There was, at a stretch, some difference in ethos or maybe techno's was a bit more defined but still, it was nothing you wouldn't find in house easy enough. Techno has room outside of the four four kick that house doesn't, mostly, but it has never been anything dominant enough to matter. Answer is probably obvious isn't it?

i've always thought of house as having a soul/r&b/disco influence, whereas techno is usually more avant/abstract/machine music without need for much (if any) melody or traditional song structure.

Like what Leo said, but there's a big grey area there. With some of my favourite artists in this field (eg Levon Vincent, Kassem Mosse, Omar S) I couldn't really tell you if they make house or techno or whether it varies track by track

Slightly off topic, but what's the difference between house and 4x4 garage?

Think it was Mel Cheron who said "house was disco on a budget" and there is a definite trend among the 'real heads' to strive for that opulence and serious songyness. (RIP UK Funky) It shares a lot with hiphop in trying to recreate something where as Techno then is a project all about the machine itself and sees its horizon a lot further in the distance. in the spirit of Kraftwerk which runs from Detroit to Northern Bleep, the Basic Channel hiss and even ardkore. I guess Pierre broke down that distinction early on though and I still couldn't tell you what really would puts Inner City in this box and Todd Terry in the other.


4x4 garage (UK) is slightly narrower than the big House beast. There is little Chicago, acid, Balearic as it draws from the post-Levan sound of New York and Jersey, Tony Humphries, MAW, Strictly Rhythm, Nervous etc More songs and that biddlyboop Korg organ sound Grant Nelson mastered than beating you over the head with claps and cowbells like Adonis.

absolutely. lots of stuff by detroit guys like carl craig and juan atkins/model 500 can be really soulful techno but not quite full-on house. the "disco on a budget" line is a pretty good description of house too.

i would say techno is more like krautrock... more experimental, more punishing, more cerebral.

i learned that i didn't really know shit about house from Johnny Abstract of Manchester, who is not unknowledgable in these matters... the house music that he showed was much rougher and rawer, but still soulful, maybe more like a hopeful kind of blues than disco.

I always saw house as sexier and more social, which may also still be true.

as far as the topic goes, there isn't that much that's getting me really excited... a few 12"s last year from Joey Anderson have got to me, but with large swathes of stuff not really doing it for me at all. UntilMyHeartStops put out some great 12"s and I would expect them to continue this.

I'm still waiting for something to crack the whole scene wide open... I've gotten quite sick of many 4/4 events... if I take ecstacy I'm fine, great uninhibited conversations, getting into the music, but if I don't I just don't really gel, get bored of the music really quickly, get grumpy and feel totally out of place.

So for me I would like to see a quite radical change to the infrastructure surrounding house & techno events... less emphasis on certain chemicals and experiences, bit more freedom to go to places that aren't often explored.

It's something that I've tried to do with my own work. I'm really inspired by techno and tried to incorperate some more experimental and less rigid elements into it. Hit and miss results!

I usualy find him really hit and miss but this sounds like a good'un.

Not heard the Pangaea Fabric CD but genraly the Hessle related guys are the best at playing techno for me they just mix it up with more energy, like when you hear a pure techno DJ play techno its never quite as fun raw and energetic even when they play simular tracks no idea how they manage it.

There was a well nice twisted hypnotic rushing track on the Hessle show the other night by Minor Science called Happens, hopefuly its on the way in the near future.

Kind like a minimal garage thing. Can't really tell from the clipse how good it's gonna be, its all about the massive subs and twisted rhythms with Elgato for me and I can't hear any subs yet.

Have another 12" out, never really feel Tom Trago on his own bar the odd dub version he does now and again, but when he hooks up with Bok Bok its gold.

Loved that RA mix Bok Bok did hope some of that comes out. There was some mad tracks by Neana and Deamonds. Liked this n'all:

Raw fun Night Slugs/Fade To Mind/Jam City/Jersey Club party tracks always liven up a house mix.
