objectively a fascinating and
rapidly developing historical situation which will have long lasting and far-reaching
implications for the entire world

Because it's neither of those things, and because no one on this board has ever said anything insightful about US politics.

Go on, Gus, tell us again how anyone who doesn't like Trump is a "triggered snowflake" (as I believe the phrase goes).

I like Rich so I won't stoop to insult but suffice it to say that, while I find his takes ln Italian art films to be straight fuego, he doesn't understand anything about US politics that will give him any special insight into what's going on

Luke doesn't either obviously, but he's lighter with delivery and a little more playful which is slightly less tiresome

If I wanted to sensemake this one, I'd be listening to people who have firsthand close knowledge of Musk and Trump, or have spent decades in Washington, or have worked for USAID, etc. And those people are talking! They're saying interesting things. I'm not seeing any of their views being linked or cited on this board. I'm seeing more Rich Tea Biscuits ad hominem

Anyway, in the absence of enlightenment, what do we make of this?

Donald Trump has said Vladimir Putin was “doing what anybody would do” after Russia launched a massive missile and drone strike on Ukraine days after the US cut off vital intelligence and military aid to Kyiv.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday Trump said he finds it “easier” to work with Russia than Ukraine and that Putin “wants to end the war”.

Seems reasonable

Trump reportedly told Justin Trudeau he does not believe the border between the US and Canada is “valid” and he wants to “revise” it. Trump has also said he wants to bring Canada to its knees by driving them into economic ruin.

How about denying that you did the stuff you were celebrating with a chainsaw three days ago?
I think this flexibility is to Trump's great credit and why he's not an ideologue, as pointed out elsewhere.

Flexibility is good... flailing madly around with no apparent plan, changing the message every day in a way that makes it impossible for people or businesses to plan, is not.

On the one hand they decelerate the economy, cause inflation and crash confidence in the stock market - and on the other hand they make all the other countries hate you and piss off your allies.

It's double-pronged genius.
The allies hating the US is part of the plan to get Putin to like Trump enough to concede peace to Ukraine. Putin doesn't really want nuclear war with Europe, so Europe gearing up for nuclear war due to a "misunderstanding" of the US' true position helps the process.

Is the stock market crashed? No.

It does the opposite of hurt Trump's credibility in Putin's eyes, with peace negotiations ongoing. As I previously stated, once Trump gets a proper breakthrough his approach to Putin will change.

Another benefit is that Europe feeling estranged from the US takes Trump's request that they become militarily self-sufficient seriously as they feel under new threat.
