Perhaps revenge for all the industrial towns hollowed out by globalization, their inhabitants decimated by fentanyl.
i think there's a particular thing in america where people hate being patronized and otherwise shit on by the good and the great on the coasts, who have got the money and the wealth and who have simultaneously also taken the moral high ground. the resentment goes both ways. part of the animus powering trump i think is this kind of vengeance. wreaking destruction against the people that looked down on you.

when brexit was coming down the pipe that's how i felt about it. i could feel that one. a good chance to give a kick against the comfortable and complacent people.

If 50,000 jobs are lost as a result and lots of other jobs too won't the cost of supporting them as unemployed fall on the taxpayer, is this really a net saving?

Are we just seeing the US "cut waste" by changing from paying people to work to paying them not to work?
How dare you imply that these are incompetent DEI hires rather than people who can do some other job.

i don't think the USAID thing is remotely about saving money. it's about destroying something they don't like i think, and potentially also something that's intended to work on a symbolic level.
Not another conspiracy theory. This one's really simple. They're saving money and aid will follow the "charity begins at home" principle invoked by Vance where possible.

Except of course it was the exact same communities, dependent on industry and agriculture and tourism, that voted most heavily for Brexit and were then the most badly affected by it, while the latte-snorting metropolitans carried on more or less as if nothing had happened.

I mean, I get where you're coming from in terms of sources of resentment, but then I'm not sure how much sympathy I can muster for people who've chosen to cut their face off to spite their nose, as it were. Maybe that makes me "part of the problem", though, I dunno.

Easier to convince a thousand men based on their prejudices than one with facts and logic

Fuck off, why would you assume that? Surely you can gather that if 50k people lose their jobs then they are not all gonna walk into one straight away. No need to bring your racism into it.

I have to fucking LMAO about this.
I know for some reason you've got a bee in your bonnet for having grown up in the uk as working class or whatever, but as someone who came up (especially in my early years) poor as fuck and in and around red areas, rednecks look down on people just as much if not MORE. And they fuckin despise people that are different, and they will give anyone who is different a very hard time.
I mean, fuck, my grandfather was a cripple as a child in the hollows of appalachia and had to physically fight every day and they were about as poor as you could get. So much for the poor and "small town" folk and christians looking out for each other.
FURTHERMORE, a lot of people that are feel "looked down on" are WILFULLY ignorant and bigoted.
My mom, coming from a terrible situation as a very young mother with 2 children managed to put herself through university and get a master's degree all on our her own, and this was during the 70s when people, especially in red areas like where we were, would try to pull out all of the stop to make it hard for a woman to succeed, and her "hillbilly elegy" if she were ever to write one would be Vance's to shame with all of the horrible things she went through and actually my whole family for generations.
so, basically, fuck any people in red areas that feel looked down upon when they are wanting to give everyone else a bad time (I won't even get into the racism - talk about looking down on people again)

yeah. i think both of these things (what you're saying and what I'm saying) are true. although i can't say much about the kind of people you're talking about coz i'm never around them.

That doesn't really sound like a platform for building a powerful country with a united and happy people all pulling together. It sounds as though making America great is more about spitefully fucking over your neighbours who have a better car than you while moaning about brown people and queers and pretending other countries don't matter or in fact exist.

I should have just quoted the bible, especially as people in red areas like to use as another reason to look down on people while ironically shouting about feeling "put upon" or looked down on by people in blue areas
Matthew 7:3-5 "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?"

it's kind of weird how people didn't care about inner cities being hollowed out of opportunity, or how people didn't care about the crack epidemic besides how much more people should be punished for crack compared to cocaine

but for some reason people care about people in industrial and rural areas being decimated, and the drugs problems in their areas

if i could only put my finger on what that difference might be...
