There are at least a dozen mimics of The Abyss that either get rushed out by b-movie studios to beat it, or get pumped out in its wake

But none of them have a psycho like Cameron to direct them, and insist that they actually shoot all the scenes underwater and spend millions developing custom underwater camera rigs and use real liquid oxygen perfleurocarbons (which led to UK censoring some scenes for animal abuse IIRC)

Catalog too I think. I dont remember sun or tech. I do remember a shifting protean mockingbird of an NTI.

With The Alien vs Predator ones I've never watched them, certainly not all the way through, they are just too silly.

Prometheus I found really frustrating cos of the way it sort of interestingly expands the mythology while being a terrible film.

Event Horizon's basically a haunted house film in space. They build a ship with a gravity drive and it accidentally travels to Hell and comes back with a sort of evil sentience.

Fuck knows, maybe it's just a bright light? But now I've said it, wouldn't a film where you go underwater and find a sun be really cool. I always used to love "journey to the centre of the earth" when I was a kid

saw alien romulus today coz it's pissing down and i wanted to watch something easy. quite a good film but it is a bit weird that they are scraping whatever they can get out of these old things. i came to alien through computer game magazines when i was about 12 and didn't have a computer but liked reading about the games. the writers wrote about alien as though you should know what they were talking about, the acid blood and so on. idk i guess there's some good ideas in there isn't there. the acid blood and the facehuggers basically. it's very familiar by this point.

The Christian current in Alien3 was an interesting angle that never amounted to much due to the scripts and film being so chopped about. There are remnants of it in what ultimately appeared, but it's never really explored. The idea of a bunch of religious people encountering one of the aliens and believing it's The Devil is great.

There's a hint of it in Covenant when the captain tells David he met The Devil when he was a child.

Yeah but a fairly effective - albeit not without flaws - one.

But Sphere and EH are both about finding a freaky spaceship with a weird sphere at the centre that fucks with the exploration team. Hints of Solaris in there too.

Yeah I hate all these remake, redo, squeeze every drop of blood from all this old stuff... so much simpler than having a new idea. My little protest takes the form of never watching or at least paying for any of these things.

There's concept art floating around from when the Prometheus sequel was Alien: Paradise Lost and not Covenant.
