(i thought there was a useful quote about this but it turned out to be dr johnson "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man"... which is perhaps relevant to the blackout drunk stage at least

That's the line Thompson used as the epigraph to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

A while back I made loads of notes on this Jorge Guillén poem which is about exactly this. I'll type them up when I get a chance, but here's the poem.

PERFECCIÓN

Queda curvo el firmamento,
Compacto azul, sobre el día.
Es el redondeamiento
Del esplendor: mediodía.
Todo es cúpula. Reposa,
Central sin querer, la rosa,
A un sol en cénit sujeta.
Y tanto se da el presente
Que al pie caminante siente
La integridad del planeta.
The firmament remains curved
Compact blue, over the day
It is the rounding
Of splendour: Midday.
All is a dome. Repose,
Center without desire, the rose,
To a sun in its zenith subjected.
And so much it gives the present
That the walking foot feels
The integrity of the planet.

That was my first pass, let's see if Chat can do better:

The firmament remains curved,
a solid blue above the day.
It is the rounding-off
of splendor: midday.
All is dome. At rest,
the rose—centered without intent—
is bound to a sun at zenith.
And the present yields so fully
that the foot of the one walking
feels the planet’s wholeness.

Your version's much better than stupid chat gtp. Not too bad at all. It's more 'held' than 'subjected' though, I'd say. And the rose is at the centre 'without meaning to be' rather than 'without desire'. Pretty good effort though sus!
