Midtown 120 Blues is the key. It's the album that brought her to fame. Lush deconstructed NYC house with a serious message. Then the KS.HE - Routes Not Roots album for a broader spectrum. There's a pretty good primer over on ilx:

Sprinkles is American and djed in the NYC gay and drag scene from the 80s onwards. She's pretty much as credible as it gets.

I mean if you're gonna skim through it at 10seconds per track you're not gonna get it. She's all about that long form slow release pill packet. It's music that rewards patience. It's not about bangers.

I've given it a go a few times over the years. Just button pushing for Pavlov's conditioned dogs. Here's a black preacher giving it some. Soulful. Etc etc etc. For the mugs.

It got crazy acclaim from all the right places. You don't get it. It's OK. House is not your domain.

People are easily fooled. And more than that they want more of the same. even when it's ersatz and rote.

They want to feel 'soulful' they want to feel plugged in to the big warm African American soul machine of the olden days. They want to pretend that's still possible. House is a feeling.
