I hate this song so so much, viscerally loathe it that it's become one of my favourite guilty pleasures when I'm feeling masochistic. Kate Bush doesn't trigger the same amount of revulsion in me, I'm just left nonplussed.

LOL
We had to endure that in Spanish class one year.

madonna has a cross gender teenage sex appeal that Kate Bush doesn't, however much as grown adults we might find that playing into patriarchal notions of femininity, it's there and its irresistable. she makes no secret of being anything but a conformist. there is nothing avant in madonna and there is no pretension at that. she does not pretend to be artistic and cultured and nuanced.

ok, it's too bad this poll is closed because I would have also voted for Madonna, but to say that she was a conformist, and that she didn't have any much pretensions of being a avant, artistic, culture, a non-conformist, a rebel. what?!
That was practically her whole thing, man.

Also, did I mention in here that one of the first images I remember causing an uncomprehending stir in my loins was

I didn't know why, but I wanted to be in bed with madonna even more than I wanted a hulk hogan t-shirt

something I think about a lot is if the visual, musical, and general design aesthetic of just the very, very end of the 80s and the very, very start of the 90s. Like, when everyone finally decided they had enough with the 80s over-the-top ridiculousness and things started looking more crisp and smart.
I often kind of wonder where that would have ended if the grunge hadn't have come in. Would it ended just with just more ridiculousness? but would it still have been preferable to everyone dressing like lumberjacks?

There was some video, some song, it had to have been 85 - I remember something black fishnets - that being my visual takeaway from it.

^if there was ever an example of the fact that music don't mean shit anymore, and if it does mean something to a few young people here and there, it's too atomized and spotify playlist randomized to have an influence like it once did (i'm sure these are already well-trod paths and well-worn words here)

there was already an outstanding video, but then they spend loads of time, effort (choreography, costuming, training, etc.) and money to produce something that most people would only see once if they were home at the time, or had it set to record on their vcr

Good thread, don't think I've seen it before. Really hard to choose cos I love them both, grew up with 80s Madonna on the radio and came to Kate Bush a lot later really.

Madonna for me is Holiday, lucky star, borderline, like a virgin, material girl, into the groove, papa don't preach, la Isla bonita (fuck the haters) like a prayer, express yourself. Don't like Vogue or anything that came after.

But Kate Bush has running up that hill, cloudbusting, hounds of love, and this woman's work, - aka the four best songs ever written and performed.

So I'll go for Kate then 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Yeah, but you see, if you grew up like me, you might appreciate vogue more.
also, did you ever go dancing much?
that was almost the only time I felt good about myself
If you listen to the lyrics, especially in the beginning of the song, maybe, I dunno...

Look around, everywhere you turn is heartache
It's everywhere that you go (look around)
You try everything you can to escape
The pain of life that you know (life that you know)
When all else fails and you long to be
Something better than you are today
I know a place where you can get away
It's called a dance floor
And here's what it's for, so...

I was only 9 when it came out. Just never liked the song for some reason, dunno why really.

All the other singles up till then just remind of summers as a kid, playing in the backyard with the radio on in the background, or the hotel kiddie disco on holiday in Majorca - especially la Isla bonita

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
I laughed and puked at those photos of plastic faced madge, ofc, I'm only human, but I guess I can see how being famous and revered in part because of the way you look must fuck your head up quite a lot

Plus financial backup to get unlimited surgery, if I was in her position I'd probably look like Slimer right now
