Think most grizzlies in the UK hear garage in similar ways to Yanks, because records from both countries have sold so well & traversed so often. Eg

i loved i!, tunes that fit any kind of mood. You could cross check everyone in a list associated with the label, Fresh & Low for example & still find a diverse range of sounds. Admit to being lost a bit on uk funky ....Defected (Defective) sort of thing?

With garage it seemed the break from 4/4 to a half-step, with an mc front & middle, pulled in a blingy, wannabe rude-boy element, who through sheer stupidity managed to ruin a lot of nights out. It drew a lot of hardcore people in because the bass work is so consuming at quality volumes, plus the ladies.

I worked for a PA company for too long & the gradual transition over to promotions with 2 step were marked by a spike in bell end idiot punters, too many anecdotes, compounded by a lot of the jocks appearing to revel in it. Champagne, cognac & crack. There's sketchy & then there's prostitution rings, heroin suppliers, public school Nigerians throwing money everywhere before being picked up by a diplomatic dispatch team. Not slighting the music, but the promotional operators involved could be sick cunts, found that impossible to respect. There's masses of good music at that intersection of 4/4 & half step that have both signatures though. Todd Edwards & Grant Nelson will always feature here. A mate is obsessed with this world, his job meant he got every promo worth a damn & he sold masses of 2 step recently. If you're a buyer i could grip a list, he's knee deep in covid patients these days so no rush either.

I just want this white label above all else really.

the best rave tunes are always edging into cheese. even with some hard techno. you can just feel like if one dial was turned the other way it would go south quickly. I love that on the edge element. attunes your ear to be a certain type of way, even with the deeper heads down stuff.

just heard this one on the urbanomic podcast, what a tune. i 'd like to hear it without any of the 'gangsta' bits, i think it would hold up better. 'welcome to the system' is ok tho.

I don't have a problem with him per se, but all I was saying is he's not the beating heart of UK house culture. He's an important figure to many and gets a lot of respect stateside from people like MAW so he must be doing something right. The thing that impresses me the most is how he manages to get his hands on the multitracks of all those disco records. He's released a few decent compilations too.

in general, I've found stateside folk have no clue about any DJ's backstory or cred, if they like the tunes then they dance to it and accept the DJ. they have no idea if he's part of any legit dance music lineage, a trailblazer or copycat, all the stuff the hyper-anal music head dwell on. it's just a night out, not a dissection of the DJ's bonafides.

So what is this thread about exactly? I've lost the thread

just curious how i was missing the subtleties in house music which were made to sound so tantalising. i was hoping this would result in a beat by beat breakdown spanning the finest of hundreds of house tunes, causing the mists to clear with a world of wonders suddenly open to my ears, mind, soul, which has sort of happened though i haven't listened to every track on this thread, have been enlightened.

There's the house and garage thread that barty made full of tracks posted me, third and thread mvp, WashYourHands. I didn't realise the op was a challenge tho tbh. Also feeling kind of apathetic wrt defending 'soul.' just had a reread of most of the beyond soul thread this morning. And was reminded of why that's never going to work here because you scholarly lot have all yer intaylectual arguments against something which is, to me, a very simple and tangible thing that shouldn't need to be explained. But thats not how it works around here is it? People earnestly talking about soul now are but naive hippies holding on like elvis fans in the 70s. Let it go, we've moved on. No more emotions, kthx. ❌

Well house rhythms are not too different to dancehall rhythms in essence. it's just that the dancehall rhythm generally being below 120 mean that there is space to have rhythmic inflections that go 3 against 2 with the sub bassline anchoring things. It's where I part with barty when it comes to contemporary dancehal, there's a clave rhythm, for sure, but it doesn't possess a definite rhythmic linguistic inflection to it like it did in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

but because all house is multiples of 1 if you slow down house tracks to 110 or less the negative space becomes not too dissimilar.

So in essence it's a case of learning to listen faster, which was always the thing with breakcore and speedcore of course...

another way to look at it is the dancehall rhythm tugs at the hips. it's overtly there to appeal to the opposite sex.
