i just read that LRB article, and theres a good bit in it where they talk about a researcher who was feeding some lab octopii with squid, which they don't like. the researcher came in one day and the octopus was holding the squid that had been left for lunch. made sure the researcher could see, then shoved the squid down a drain.

Eat the octopus:

Big fan of this dish. I wouldn't dare try to prepare it myself though.

"clean the octopus by turning the body inside out and pulling away the entrails and bone-like strips sticking to the sides. Locate the stomach sac, which is about the size of an avocado stone, and cut it away."

🤮 no thanks!

Same. My local Morrisons used to sell fresh octopus fully prepared, but my girlfriend refused to eat it. She said, "Octopi are far too intelligent to eat, darling."

@craner Have to side with your other half, but I’m not using darling.

Squid = yes.

Octopus = no, because if you’ve ever looked one in the eye underwater, something intelligent is looking back.

Sexy Beast’s calamari scene etc.

They're totally delicious, especially served the galician way with potatoes, paprika, olive oil and a glass of albariño.

The little suckers on the tentacles are the best bit, they go slightly crispy, very pleasant to nibble on.
