Strictly nicked 4rom ILX (David Drake for the most part, in this case)... Cos I'm not honestly that into new rap anymore (For all i know) but I know there's ppl around like WebEschatology and Crowley who still have their ears to the ground and I'd like to hear the stuff they think's good.

This one has that kind of blunt, minimal, rugged 80s boom bap + highly distorted 808 feel that I really like in DaBaby's stuff.

This guy King Von seems to have the gimmick of telling stories about robbing people, shooting people and generally being a sociopathic bastard in the grand tradition of rap storytellers — only he's doing it to post-trap beats. And clearly he's very popular:

The one rap release I've heard this year that I can 100% recommend is the Boldy James + Alchemist album The Price of Tea in China. Which is typically brilliant production from Alchemist and Boldy James rapping really really well, less sleepy than I remember him from 5 years ago.

Running through some of the big rap playlists on spotify it's actually rare that you find a choon where they're NOT singing.

I dunno, though - I'm probably not looking in the right places but I'm getting this sense that rap is really stuck in a rut ATM. Not finding much exciting stuff at all.

when i first joined i remember there being a lot more conversations about new rap than there are now. have a lot of the people involved (e.g. crowley) moved elsewhere, or have things really gotten that much less exciting?

The nourishment is still there but the greenhouse is shattered, the hermetic atmosphere broken. The womb is dead: overexposure, cross-contamination ad homogeneity.

Maybe it's becoming more granular or amorphous.

Can't really comment, it may well be that my personal enthusiasm has run out and that's it. Could also be the sites I go on to find stuff. It just seems to be the same artists that were around 5-10 years ago.

I don't know what else to tell you other than man it happens try get into other music if you feel the urge to come back to rap or not afterwards it is what it is

all i know is that unlike you i don't pay attention to curated playlists on rap at all

i personally don't think the music has gotten any less interesting but yeah people have moved elsewhere from here

especially i think since it got so landlocked with just focusing on drill all the time

especially after i think it was clear most people on here lost interest in it so the conversation just boiled down to "remember how good uk drill was 3 years ago?"

Alchemist must have a bottomless crate of beautiful samples.

I recently watched an interview with Madlib, which now I can't find. But he talked about how he sometimes stays up for days at a time just making beats. And hardly does anything else. I assume that's what Alchemist is like, too.

Speaking of which, the return of Max B + Dame Grease is surprisingly pretty great — like going back in a time machine to 2008. (Although, as the Martorialist says, it sounds a lot like a TREE song.)

Cormega one of the few old NY guys who seems like a ok grounded guy

i'm still locked into this new Armand Hammer album a different more open sound compared to their last effort but it's just exceptional in all aspects

The fact Elucid and billy woods have been putting out alot of music the last 8 years on the forefront of this challenging style of rap aswell as coming together is something else

the fact that they have likeminded collaboraters on it seals the deal, i thought "Ramsses II" was gonna be a mess cause of all the names involved but it's great
