You're assuming the reaction is the same D-T fusion reaction used in current bombs, though. Whereas they may have found a way to harness D-D fusion, which produces fewer neutrons, or even D-p fusion, which produces none at all. In fact this would have another huge advantage over D-T fusion, because the only fuel required would be deuterium and ordinary hydrogen, both of which are stable, while tritium has to be continually replenished, since it's unstable with a half-life of about twelve years.

Very good point — in the one shot of the nuclear arsenal, they look low-maintenance and shelf stable — but there'd likely be some photodisintegration and photofission which would leave the local air a different kind of spicy for a while.

The Fremen are probably the kind of double-hard bastards who go into every engagement with the expectation that they're going to die anyway, so I doubt that would stop them. And radiation poisoning takes a few hours to kick in, anyway.

In fact it's been observed that any troops who survived being attacked with a neutron bomb (a weapon designed to maximise prompt radiation with a relatively small pressure blast) would in effect be turned into instant Fremen, that is, be stripped of any sense of self-preservation and become unstoppable suicide commandos seeking only to inflict as much damage to the enemy as possible before their inevitable death from multiple organ failure.
