i guess it comes from being 'cusp' but dissensus reminds me more of phpboard/chan/booru and irc culture which i did catch the tail end of. this broadly left-liberal set of manners and world of concerns that came with web 2.0 is in one sense an important move away from that kind of 'banter' which respects no persons and is a libertine/libertarian playground (both making it just like hell) but in another sense it is just that, a set of manners and a (proscribed) world of concerns, which takes itself too seriously. and dissensus is nice breathing room from that.
Oh yeah absolutely. It's a weird state of affairs where people's "concern" has gone full circle and is damn near Puritan levels. Example; on many places I'm on people will put content warnings when discussing in-depth details like rape, sexual assault, suicide, etc. They'll spoiler it out. And that makes sense. Some people take it a step further, and sensor in-depth discussions of alcohol and drug use, which is eh for me, but in certain scenarios I can see that being useful. The most extreme I've seen is a hobbyist Discord server that literally banned swearing. Like I'm talking about a server full of Zoomers my age, ranging from 13-18. Just teens. And they collectively banned swearing, or at minimum you have to sensor it, even for words like damn. I'm a mod on another Discord server that is in the same hobbyist community, and so we've had some crossover in members. Because a lot of the younger ones sucked, we made the server 16+ only. Still, we have had crossover members that censor themselves voluntarily, b/c of these manners.
One user on our server sent an extensive blacklist of words we should make people censor. It is at least 30 words. I'll list some - fire, politics, school, cults, incels, periods, big storms, 4chan, "Stupid", Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Melanie Martinez, long nails, sharks, and cameras. Among these they also requested that a name be censored full stop, Reece, b/c that was the name of their abuser. Like I understand if you hate seeing that name, and seeing it may give you a pit in your stomach (ik I had a similar experience with my toxic ex & seeing her name for a while) but literally censor a person's whole name!!! Our mods were like "uhhhh no we're not doing that sorry" and the person left the server with a bit of a fuss.
This blacklist was meant to protect people, but how can you have any meaningful conversation about sensitive topics when you literally blacklist talking about periods, which 50% of the population goes through? Part of me wants to laugh at this, but part of me also realizes that that person is probably severely mentally ill/disturbed and can't function within society.
Another tangent: when I see people typing, and they partly sensor words. I.e. I've texted people and they will type "r*pe" instead of "rape". Again if this is on a public forum or something, I get putting a general content warning at the top then continuing on. And putting that astriks there is supposed to help prevent triggering someone...but "r*pe" means the exact same as "Rape". Your mind reads it as the same thing. It does absolutely nothing, while trying to make yourself look like you care. It reminds me of the people I know who post things on Instagram like "Repost if you're against rape! If you don't I'll block you, I can see who views this post!" yada yada. Ofc it's nothing more than glorified chain mail. If you actually give a shit about helping people, donate to a battered woman's shelter or something. Actually do something with your time and money and conscious besides saying "I'm considerate b/c I put a star in the middle of the word rape"
Most Zoomers aren't like this, but I've seen it enough I ask myself if we're gonna see a generation of woke puritanism
