So many bats here in Portugal, see them every dusk for sure... although I think I've slightly overcounted cos there is a small bird with a similar twittery flying style that can be mistaken for a bat too.

it’s an electronic handheld device that tells you when a bat is directly above you. I think.

I think echolocation is proper the correct term for what I was calling sonar.

Seeing an owl is always a magical moment, particularly a barn owl I think.

I posted this in the nature thread the other day, but apparently there are two libraries in Portugal which are these huge old buildings with books dating back hundreds of years which are vulnerable to moths which lay book eating larvae in them if given half a chance. So the libraries encourage bats to live in their dark corners and come out at night to eat the insects.

My brother's been doing bat surveying or whatever it's called recently. He went on a course somewhere and they had him putting cameras down inside trees looking for them. I'm sure he'll piss off a load of people telling them they can't do this and that with various patches of land because of our winged friends.
