Bats

So many bats here in Portugal, see them every dusk for sure... although I think I've slightly overcounted cos there is a small bird with a similar twittery flying style that can be mistaken for a bat too.

Does it use sonar? That's just a guess. Wasn't there a subplot about counting bats and using one of those on The Detectorists?

I posted this in the nature thread the other day, but apparently there are two libraries in Portugal which are these huge old buildings with books dating back hundreds of years which are vulnerable to moths which lay book eating larvae in them if given half a chance. So the libraries encourage bats to live in their dark corners and come out at night to eat the insects.

They are down the park I fish. I often catch a Carp just as it gets dark, and they fly into the line as I'm playing the fish!

My brother's been doing bat surveying or whatever it's called recently. He went on a course somewhere and they had him putting cameras down inside trees looking for them. I'm sure he'll piss off a load of people telling them they can't do this and that with various patches of land because of our winged friends.
