and finally this one. this guy i like a lot
and he does a great debunk of the whole off-grid fetish which got me to think about all the BAD things living off-grid represents - the pretense that we can live in isolation from one another (would imagine all these billionaires who buy houses in new zealand would survive for half an hour - and preppers would probably fare just as well) and the idea that it's even a desirable thing.
i like nature... a lot in fact... but happy to be a member of the human race. happy, for example, that there's some clever people who can grow vegetables in scale so efficiently (this need to do EVERYTHING yourself is pretty inefficient and debilitating i reckon)
city living is basically very ecologically sound. i remember growing up in the countryside and to be honest we spent half the time driving around in a car. that's the truth!
these off-grid isolation fantasies - they exist BECAUSE of the interconnectedness that the the internet enables. can't imagine any of these people going ahead and making their "dream lifestyles" were it not for the ability to show off about it online (especially the cottage fairy

@Matthew you might be interested in Bolo Bolo? It's a sort've utopian vision of a more ecological society. Quite fun.
It includes a lot of stuff on rewilding the city, coupled with the ability to travel for adventure to different "bolos" some of which would be more isolated than others.

I think like a lot of introverts I need time to myself after a working week of intense sociality. But I like knowing people are around too.
Happy as a pig in shit if the fam go away for a few days but love it when they return.
So I don't think isolation is for me - even before you get to gutting your own fish.

If you do a tour from the western isles of Scotland southward down the west coast of Ireland you can get a taste of this life. Did near enough 3 months camping alone in summer, superb way to unheadfuck yourself. Wash in the sea, small budget for food and fishing. Post-Covid, if there is such a thing, highly recommended.

i guess the fun part about such projects is the designing, planning and actual building of the hut. once you're done and your sitting inside your newly built hut you'll probably start thinking, okay what am i gonna do now? drink myself to death? all alone, here in the forest?
