Following his appearance in Can't Get You Out of My Head, it's inevitable he will become more of a talking point amongst the online commentariat and twitter-left who were either previously unaware of him, or unwilling (or disinterested) in engaging with his ideas. I read Emanual Carre's biography of Limonov a few years ago after first becoming aware of him after watching Paweł Pawlikowski's 1992 documentary Serbian Epics on Radovan Karadžić and the Bosnian-Serbs, and found it utterly griping - it's by far the quickest I've ever finished a book and thoroughly recommend it to everyone on here. His best known work It's Me, Eddie is notoriously difficult to find in print in English, although I did manage to pick up a copy of the sequel His Butler's Story but never got round to reading it.

Has anyone on here read any of his works? What do we make of his ideas and politics? Do we think Curtis' portrayal of such an undoubtably complex and contradictory character did justice to his legacy?

I'm also rather surprised to find that there is only one previous mention of him on the forum - he would make an excellent subject of a guerrapittura.wordpress essay.

not reached that episode yet. sounds like a good example of these brilliant people Curtis unearths then everyone quickly reads a wikipedia entry and pretends they knew about him all along

I refuse to watch Adam Curtis on principle. Nothing of his compared to godfather and Long Good Friday.

Eduard Limonov and Vladislav Surkov hate each other.

But in many ways they are very similar because both are convinced that western democracy is a complete sham - and both are trying to create political alternatives to what they see as the second wave of stagnation that took over Russia in the 1990s. This was the result of the corruption caused by the attempt to impose western capitalist and democratic ideas on the country.

Surkov believes that the truth is that the idea of democracy will always be an illusion, that all democracies will always be "managed democracies" whether east or west. So the solution is for a strong state to manipulate people - so that they feel they are free, while they are really being managed.

Limonov's solution is the opposite. He wants to bring The People back onto the stage of history - and make them active participants in building a new future. He believes that the way to do this is to use revolutionary propaganda, and to borrow from avant-garde ideas of the spectacle, in order to galvanise the masses and break through their torpor.

Opinion in the west is divided about Limonov. Many see him as leading the resurgence of the neo-fascist right. But others believe that he is misunderstood - that Limonov is genuinely trying to create a new kind of politics.

Passé. all this stuff was tackled by Amadeo Bordiga in 1922 and then later 1951. Democracy has never failed and never will fail. That is precisely why it doesn't satisfy the intellectual.

If I ever converted to the right I'd be the biggest liberal democrat in the world. It would be consistent. Because I'm a communist I reject democracy. But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist as a real veil structuring peoples lives. It certainly hasn't been hijacked and it certainly hasn't been perverted.

It's punk. And punk is petit-bourgeois in essence. This is why rave had nothing to do with punk. Punk always speaks truth to power, which is a nauseating cliche in 2021.

Punks are the only thing I agree with tories on tbh. They have a point. You rebel against the system without understanding the system. Hedonism is much better. It doesn't make that demand. Neither does football hooliganism or soulboy culture.
