The pop/hardcore continuum

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
Although lately I've been wondering if I've sacrificed something in the process of becoming obsessed with this fusion, this fusion is something I really seek out (if not consciously) in music.*

Music that is melodic and romantic and sweet but also has hard-edged, abrasive elements.

Most obviously and potently captured by hardcore records. But also there in UK Garage. Less so in grime? And my idols the Neptunes were all about this at their (to my ears) best stuff - inherited from Tribe Called Quest's marrying of light jazzy chords to hard hip-hop drums.

I'm wondering what music has historically encapsulated this mixture and what music today is delivering something hard but happy? (No jokes about Mormons with erections required here.)

* Having recently gotten back into listening to determinedly dark music and not feeling guilty about being a hair shirt puritan as a result.
